"I sprout mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk drawer. Very nutritious, but they smell like death."

I appreciate your upload. Quick and to the point. This search was spurred by not being able to find any sprouts in stores. One of the few vegetables I actually like!

You omit 2 critical and common points of failure:

1) SEEDS: Not all seeds you encounter in the store were processed equally before they get to you. If they'd been treated somehow to increase shelf life, or dried at too high a temperature, or degerminated, or hulled, et al, they will NOT sprout. If you wish to avoid a crap shoot and guarantee a high rate of germination, look for seeds labeled as "Organic" and most specifically "for sprouting".

2) WATER: If your municipal water is chlorinated in excess of a very modest level, it can inhibit germination. If there is enough chlorine present that you can taste/smell it, there is a decent chance it will cause problems. If that happens, try again with bottled, distilled, or best of all reverse osmosis filtered water.

BTW, for the whitest and cleanest tasting sprouts, keep them completely DARK throughout sprouting (an inverted opaque bag or box works fine) ... only give them light if you plan to take them beyond simple sprouting and grow them into microgreens.

they missed a step. you have to take out the ones that dont sprout. those ones will rot and ruin the good ones.

Use an ordinary jar and hold the cheesecloth on with a strong rubber band.

You can sprout Broccoli seeds (not planting one's from the seed packets) too and they're highly nutritious. I thought the jars were supposed to be on their sides though, & rinsed every day twice.

In India this is like a daily routine for all of us because we eat a lot of sprouts everyday

So the next time a customer complaints that what I sold them on the corner was mostly stems and seeds, I'm gonna say "So sprout the seeds and start your own stash!"

I used a 1 liter wide mouth plastic sugar (or salt) container from the grocery store, and poked holes in the plastic snap on lid. Works great for soaking draining, sprouting and storage in the fridge, all in the same container.

You sprout them to eat? I though you grow them to plant

I find sprouting in air temps of about 55-60 makes them much less prone to spoilage even if it takes a day or two longer. Root cellars are good. Once they start to go bad they are almost impossible to eat. Also, I use 1g jars. Much easier to use, clean.
