Good tutorial. One thing, make sure your UPnP is disabled. It has no authentication or security measures, and most consumer router vendors have UPnP running on the WAN port as well. This means, someone can open connections into your network. My advice --> Disable UPnP and change your DDNS as someone can simply open up connections to your network by sending a UPnP packet to your router.

It did not work for me. Everything worked smoothly until I got to the VPN implementation on my mac. 1) what is the machine authentication PW vs. user PW? 2) When I create a DDNS, I do not see a user name only an email, is that OK? Any help is appreciated!

Just to clarify, if anyone knows, at about 10:46 SpaceRex says to use the "Machine authentication" password. Is that the IKE authentication (?) password specified in the VPN setup under L2TP/IPSec section? I'm going to try that, but I've already run into issues in setting this up with Google Wifi so am not confident that it's going to work with the various educated guesses I had to take so far in my own particular situation.

I'm having a ton of trouble on widows with an error message that says "the network connection between your computer and the Vpn server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. this could be because one of the network devices (e.g, firewalls, nat, router, etc) between your computer and the remote server is not configured to allow vpn connection. please contact your administrator or your service provider to determine which device may be causing the problem

Once again, you are the man. Can you please talk in more detail about the bought vpn services out there. Why we might want them, not want them, how they work in conjuction with NAS and home worker vpn connections. Oh and vpns direct on routers.

Tutorial was also helpful on creating a VPN server on the Synology Router itself. It's actually easier because you don't need to do the port forwarding. It was just confusing at first because the UI's are so Similar. Once I figured out DSM vs SRM, it all made sense! I am surprised how many features the synology router has. It's really a little computer in itself.

For my own education and nothing nefarious, does a self-hosted VPN on the synology protect someone from snooping eyes whilst pirating on torrent sites? If I understand correctly, the VPN is intended to protect inward traffic by going through the router first rather than what pirates use it for, which is outward traffic in a hope to prevent ISP or other eyes from seeing illicit things from being downloaded. Is this correct or does a synology-hosted VPN protect against the latter as well?
