Synology NAS VPN server setup, configuration and creating a connection in windows are the topic of our video. the entire process is so easy that you might even be surprised.

VPN servers are usually located on firewall devices and with a good reason but in some cases, you might find that your Synology NAS is much stronger than your firewall device and thus, running VPN server on your Synology will bring better performance.

Synology NAS VPN server is super easy to setup, in fact, the entire setup process includes installing an app from the package center, checking a few checkboxes and your done. your just need to make sure you have port forwarding configuring to point VPN sever ports to your Synology NAS.

There is a caveat when connecting to VPN in windows operating system. Windows might think that your VPN server is behind a NAT and will not establish a connection. we need to specifically tell Windows to allow this connection to be made with a simple registry tweak.

Synology NAS VPN server is overall a good and solid solution that relatively easy to setup, brings solid performance and might be even a better solution than running VPN server on your router. worth a shot.

Super video, thank you. Followed your instructions and it took about 5 minutes to get VPN set up on my NAS. I using Windows 11 and didn't have to edit the registry.

Great video! Never saw the L2TP/IPSec setup, but it looks like a great option - nice job!

When connecting to your synology L2TP VPN from a mac, be sure to enable "Send all traffic over VPN connection" in the connection options (on the mac). Otherwise, you won't be able to access your synology's local IP addresses.

At 9:43 I got a different error: 'the L2TP connection attempt failed because the security layer encountered a processing error during initial negotiations with the remote computer'. Adding the 'assumeUDP...' to the Registry Editor didnt help. I think I opened the routerports correctly, because I tested the connection at the synology control panel -> external acces -> routerconfiguration. It told me the connections were OK. Do you know a fix? EDIT: This problem only occurs when trying to connect from a different network than the network the Synology is on. I can connect to the VPN in windows when on the same network.

Thanks for the video!
When on the VPN, how does a non-secure connection work? Lets say I connect to the VPN and want to access a home router to configure it (no SSH), so entering the IP, it says not secure. how would one go about securing the connection without exposing it to the public (domain/reverse proxy)?
Is L2TP secure enough to be doing these things or should I look into another method to gain more security and be able to work from my home network from anywhere?

I will have to try this method out. Can you remotely on Windows MAP a network drive across WAN to the NAS folder using SMB?

I'm missing something in understanding Avi.
Please explain how a clientless VPN compares to a VPN that uses endpoint clients like WireGuard, Cisco, OpenVPN, etc.

I am sorry, but missing such crucial steps as firewall settings and port forwarding makes this tutorial useless for me.
