How do you get past the guide? I need to put in 8 button holes on a double breasted waist coat. Can the fabric be placed under the plates?

Having the bottom metal plate on this foot limits the orientation of some buttonhole placements. Can the foot be used without the bottom metal plate and are there any videos for troubleshooting buttonholes with this foot. TIA
