My Nigerian friend once summed it up perfectly.

" leaders helped free Africa by becoming politicians. Politicians ruined Africa by pretending to be leaders"

The main issue is that even for the President of the country, the ANC is more important than the people of the country. Mismanagement and corruption, appointment of people to positions that they have no business being in. The audacity of this government shocks and amazes me daily.

The ANC has by far been the worst thing to happen to South Africa. And yet, the people continue to vote for the worst of the worst politicians. The ANC is an embarrassment for the African continent.

Overthrow a racist government. Create a racist government. Wonder why nothing has changed. South Africa.

My father worked at the nuclear research lab at WITS, Johanessburg. As i remember it, the research lab was systematically closed down after 1994, even though there was much warning given to the Government that a time would come where there was not enough energy infastructure to power the country, and that more investment, not less, was required to secure the energy future of South Africa. They had DECADES of warning about this, but chose to do something else with the money and time.

One of the biggest mistakes any society can make is putting individuals into roles that they are not capable of doing.

Pretending than Mandala was some beacon of integrity is absurd.

As a South African, I feel the biggest issue that made corruption this bad is the fact that the ANC has been in power for 30 years without having to worry about getting re-elected.

Having one party dominance for so long is no different from an authorisation state, corruption just grows naturally.

As an American, my takeaways are:

1) blind party/policy loyalty just breeds corruption. Whatever your party, if you don't reflect honestly on your party's flaws, you become complicit.

2) you can't directly legislate hearts and minds and trying to do so typically just breeds injustice and resentment

3) when you're trying to use the ends to justify the means, you really need to think about, realistically, what is the end actually going to be and what other problems might it create?

From what I've heard, one of the flipsides of BEE and similar policies was a lot of middle class white South Africans now believed, rightly or wrongly, that the system was now stacked against them, and their ambitions and advancement in corporations and organisations would be limited in favour of black African populations. So quite a few of them began to leave South Africa or encourage their children to leave, slowly but steadily over the decades, until a quarter of the white population had migrated to places like Europe, North America and Australasia. This probably helped with the goals of BEE, easier to hire or promote black candidates when there are fewer white candidates in the first place, but there were some consequences, a significant brain drain, and a white population that increasingly became polarised between a poor angry underclass who couldn't afford to leave (and couldn't get a visa anyway) and a rich upper class who had enough wealth and privilege to avoid BEE entirely.

For anybody who is not completely floored by the situation in South Africa right now, I would like to remind people that this is the country that had the high-tech base to assist Israel in building nuclear weapons. South Africa then gave up that nuclear weapons program and hasn't continued it. This country used to lead Africa in terms of technological development, not just overall economy

Thank you so much. I am an elderly white south african. Your reporting was accurate and fair. We are not South Africa as l remember it. It is heartbreaking to see the destruction of our infrastructure and everything that made us a first world nation only 30 years ago.

For people wondering, South Africa, a country of approximately 60 million people, is carried by around 3 million people who pay personal income tax and other taxes that aren't Value Added Tax.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the attempted genocide of white farmers. South Africa didn't have anyone to replace those farmers with, so there was mass starvation, similar to what happened in Cambodia. If I remember correctly, they're still struggling with food production as a result because there's neither enough people interested in learning to farm, nor enough people who can teach it. That's a pretty important part of South African history that really highlights a lot of the problems they face today.
