You can do this with a flat rock as well if you don't want to build a basket.

I would consider that a "live fall trap." In my experience, a "dead fall trap" makes an animal dead by something (ie: a log or rock) falling on it's head or neck

Made a bunch of the figure four traps as a kid.
Stick a bait on the end and you were good to go.
We had thousands of acres of woods behind our house that was corp of engineers land where they had war games years back.
We found a kitchen and covered eating areas as well as latrines.
It was the perfect playground for me and my buddies.
We camped and roamed all over those woods.
