As a child, I had terrible night terrors that would wake me up screaming, or I’d be out about the house adventuring on a sleepwalking outing.
After the birth of my children, I had terrible insomnia & despite whatever I tried I couldn't “sleep when the baby slept”. Then my Neurodivergent children kept me awake for 5 years 🤣 My relationship with sleep, and daytime fatigue has been a lifelong struggle. It never occurred to me that this may be related to my neurotype. Turns out that with my Autism-ADHD discovery, my sleep mysteries are solved 🤷🏼♀️
Here are some facts about Autistic sleep (spoiler it’s gloom)
💚 Sleep problems are one of the most common co-occurring conditions for Autists
💚 50-80% of autistic children experience sleep disorders (compared to 9-50% of NT children)
💚 Autistics are more likely to have a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder (CRSWDs). Many Autists have a mutation within the CLOCK gene which impacts circadian rhythm.
💚 Autistics are more likely to have a mutation in genes regulating melatonin resulting in a “flat melatonin curve”. Thus our bodies often do not feel tired or send the same level of tired cues at night, & we may feel sleepier during portions of the day/upon waking
💚 Up to 80% of Autistics will have a sleep disorder within their lifetime
💚 Insomnia difficulties include: Difficulty falling asleep, night wakings, and early morning rising with the inability to fall back to sleep
💚 Autistics more likely to experience parasomnias-these include sleep paralysis (waking but not being able to move), sleepwalking, and night terrors/sleep terrors
💚 On average Autistics get 15% REM sleep (NTs on average get 25%). REM sleep is where we consolidate learning & memory & is important for a host of physical & mental health things
💚 Repetitive behaviors & hyperactivity increase w/ poor sleep (which then makes sleep more difficult and it can become a vicious cycle)
