As a former tortoise owner, this very much struck a cord. Tortoises, compared to dogs and much less people, dont have a lot of needs. They are solitary animals, basically eating whatever plants you put in front of them they like. And you will know what they like because they will eat everything else.

My girl had a rather nice enclosure, but she started getting too big. We found out later she was a different subspecies, one that does grow bigger. And I could tell, even in those reptilian eyes that she wanted more freedom. She loved running around the rather large (40 sq foot) walled off section of the yard where we let things grow wild. No weed pulling, no pesticides, bring her out there on a summer day for a few hours, read a book and check every couple of pages she hadnt dug under the fence. When it was too cold and the plants were all dead, you could see her attitude shift. She wanted activity, so she would try to climb the walls of her indoor enclosure.

She is currently living happily on a big reptile preserve eating and wandering around as much as she likes. The type of life she deserves.

You know, dogs are smart enough that Poptart's takeaway from this video might be that she should wander off camera more often because she gets a treat when she does so.

"i dont want to be advancing abusive relationships" genuinely a great catch. i find a lot of the ways we learn to perform love are really just cover for a fundamentally abusive relationship and the more i'm critical of it the better my relationships get

we used to let my childhood dog roam the neighborhood in my town basically every day. by the time she was old though (she lived about 15 years), the town had gone from just barely not rural to every lot covered with identical mcmansions. the woods disappeared, the roads got busy, and it just wasn't safe anymore. a few years after she passed, my next dog got out and wandered off. within a half hour, she showed up in our driveway in the back of a police cruiser. crazy how fast things can change.

Dogs are often much happier if they are given a job or are involved in a sport. If you don't live in an enviornment where you can let a dog free roam, putting in time to find something to do with your dog to stimulate them physically and mentally helps. Go on adventures and hikes together. Let your dog motivate you to go out and be active.

I had a yellow lab when I was growing up! She was named Honey, and she was an 100 lb aloof weirdo who somehow magically materialized whenever we sat at the dinner table. She took her job as a guard dog very seriously once my parents had me and my sister, but she would put up with toddler-me well enough that I *loved* her lol. She really liked to wander off too, usually to go roll around in the local creek and beg the neighbors for treats.

Hi Adam, really enjoyed the livestream, but next time I think that I and the other fans can agree that the show would be greatly enhanced if you were to incorporate a backflip towards the end. Thanks!

I'm glad you addressed that a long life not well lived is nothing compared to a shorter life that is well lived, this doesn't just apply to dogs

Having this in a playlist of “Things to listen to while I work” alongside a lot of Vlad Vexler stuff meant your opening threw me for a wonderful loop.

I’m 25 years old, had a feral childhood, and believe that feral childhoods are still possible in the US. I mean I spent the 10 most formative years of my childhood in middle-class central Florida (‘05-‘16). I lived grew up in the heart of stand your ground country. There was a huge government housing project encircling my school and multiple trailer parks in the surrounding area. I lived in the intersection of ghetto, white trash, and suburbia. Even there there were small patches of woods here and there; perhaps small for an adult but large enough to contain an entire adolescence worth of adventure. When bored I would ride my bike 10 miles down the train tracks to the river to catch fish. I would go swimming with my friends in retention ponds, the list goes on. Our modern suburbia does not preclude a free childhood, it merely makes the places childhood adventure is found harder for us adults to see.

As far as potatoes with vinegar, etc: Adam recommended vinegar in his skillet home-fries recipe, not the oven fries. Acid helps keep the potato more intact so that it doesn't stick really bad and disintegrate in the frying pan.

For oven fries, it's arguably better to use a base like baking soda in the boil water (Kenji reccomends this in his oven fries video). Bases cause the potato to disintegrate a bit more readily. Combined with the long boil time for the oven fry recipe you end up with a sort of shaggy mashed-potato layer coating your fries. This layer ends up crisping up into that nice glassy shell that you want in oven-roast potatoes. And since you aren't moving them around nearly as much in the oven as compared to a frying pan, you don't have to worry about them falling apart.

Most house dogs are bored out of their minds. Think how you feel when the electricity goes out and you just have to sit there doing nothing. This is how dogs must feel.

About skipping your ads, if someone skips it, they were likely not interested from the start and won't get interested later, not by the CTA either unless there a really good deal. And that is okay, a sponsor does a ROI analysis and will expect that the majority who is sown the ad isn't going to buy.

Hey Adam, I just wanted to provide you some insight on something that you mentioned around 50:40 regarding the end of ads. This is most likely a spike you see due to add-ons that exist to skip sponsored potions of videos. These add-ons will skip and land you precisely at the end of the ad seamlessly.

Hi Adam. I liked this format, certainly a good companion to the scripted episodes and the 'Adam and Lauren shoot the breeze' episodes.

There are interesting studies that Dr. Gregory Berns has done with dogs in MRI machines that show their love for us is very much a thing of it’s own, disconnected from food and reward. I expect Adam’s examples may be biased due to him being raised with less importance being placed on dogs just like me referencing these MRI studies are biased towards my overly attached style of loving dogs lol.

Poptart is adorable! My dog, Blackberry, is glad to know there are other dogs named after foods out there!

Slow is no issue on Youtube. There's the 1.5x, 1.75x or 2x that cares for that. The only matter is having a clear articulated and to the point diction, which is why people keep coming back.
