The Maddest Truth

The idea of the patriarchy is that men get to the positions of power not through merit/competence, but through alternative mechanisms. This could range from nepotism, opression of women, or any other sort of tyranny. Once said men are at the top, or at least towards the top of the heirarchy, they continue this cycle of oppression. As Peterson mentions in other lectures, once a heirarchy is no longer based on merit you can deem it corrupt, but by that point it's already completely useless. The inconvenient truth however, is that because our society functions as well as it does, it is blatantly evident that we do not live in a patriarchal society, but rather one that places a premium on competence.

Somewhat click-bait. This wasn't so much about patriarchy, but more about the idea that all hierarchies are corrupt because they're purely based on power. Yes, Peterson mentioned the patriarchy, but the idea that all hierarchies are corrupt doesn't necessarily have anything to do with patriarchy.

Define power? Competence allows you to have acquisitive power and social capital. Intelligence allows you to have intellectual property and power. With these powers you can rule and overrule. The problem is not the power but the consistent and categorical overruling based on our systemic preferences.

He is making the point that Hierarchies are normal institutions based on competence. And the most competent will fill in appropriate roles within them. He is explaining thus that Hierarchies are not based on on gender or the power and tyranny of one gender over another, as a result, Patriarchal Imperative does not exist, and if it so happens that Hierarchies are led by men it is because they were the most competent. At least how I understood the argument.

I'm A Big Fan Of Jordan And Proud He's Canadian..
However ::
The title of the video : "There is no Patriarchy". is my reason for posting this comment
The most evidential thing of a Patriarchy in our Society, and most others around the world is Surnames.
Our children take on the Fathers Surname, the Wife generally takes on the Husbands Surname and this has been tradition for ages eons.
It's one of the few things that has lasted thousands of years, and it is clear evidence of the Man' Surname Being Prominent.
Things are changing, but for the most part that tradition remains the same.
It's a traditions that I like...
I think the value of passing a Family Name On From Generation to Generation is a Healthy Means To Build Equity, Build A Name Of Standing And Meaning. It Has Historical Value, and It's Something The Vast Majority Are Proud Of.
The Tradition is ancient. Kings and Queens, Royalty, High Ranking Officials, Pre Egyptian, Old World it's been the way for a very very long time and for good reason.
It's a means of protection which has been the Father's Role Primarily To Protect His Family, His Clam, His Tribe, His Community His Nation and that continues to this very day.
It Is Patriarchal In Every Regard..

I love Jordan Peterson, but are there really people who believe that hierarchies are based exclusively on power? Peterson himself admits that power is a component of competence based hierarchies. I think that's also what most leftists believe... I guess it's a question of how much power plays a role? Can someone help me out with this?

He doesn't address the history of male physical advantage and the threat of violence towrds women that we have every reason to believe has always existed. If women stepped out of line they often were physically punished. The threat was always there, however subtle. And yes, it still exists in the west albeit much less than some other cultures.Patriarchy is power and the physical expression is a part of it. The only way to counter this is in the way we raise our male children. The thought of using their power this way over women should be made inconceivable to them.

In nature patriarchies are defined as hierarchies among males, deciding who gets to reproduce or not, and where females are not suppressed at all. Among humans it's said to be opposite, though how the shift came to be has never been explained, and can you imagine Peterson bending his mind around that? Me neither, and did you listen to his interview with Richard Wrangham? I did, and when Peterson didn't manage to come up with even - one - critical question, in a more than 90 minute talk about a highly controversial topic, then it's because he is a servant for his masters and a mouse, more than a man.
