Why & How Do GLP-1s Work? Mechanism of Action

I am a big believer in understanding the WHY. When I understand the WHY, the better equipped I am to troubleshoot when a problem or new insight arises.

So with that in mind, I have been meaning to write an article specifically on the WHY and how the GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro work!

How do these drugs help us to lose weight and manage our blood sugars? When you are equipped with this information, hopefully, you will have a better understanding of potential side effects and if your medication may or may not be working!

My husband and one daughter don’t ever really feel hungry. They also quickly feel full and literally cannot overeat. They truly eat “all they want” and don’t gain weight because they don’t want anything. I am different and have to watch carefully how much I eat. As I’m nearing 50 some of the weight I’ve lost over the last 10 years starting creeping up. The wegovy is like a miracle for me. Now I don’t care about food just like them. Just doing a maintenance dose now every three or four weeks now.

Because of the issue with filling non-T2 prescriptions for Mounjaro in the US I was moved to Trulicity. How does Trulicity differ from Ozempic when it comes to retraining the brain? I have lost all the weight I need to lose but am quite concerned about regaining it. I’m wondering if I should push for another GLP-1. Any insights would be appreciated! I’m happy to see you back to making videos - your content is quite informative!

Is it healthy for the food to sit in our digestion longer? Are there studies on that?

What are your thoughts on compounding pharmacies making Tirzepatide with vitamin B added? I’m considering this because it costs about half of the Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro. Thx

I can only get saxenda approved by insurance. Is ozempic better because it’s continuos action? I can’t find any videos explaining why ozempic is better? Is the sexanda mechanism the exact same on pancreas/liver?

Hello, i just started the 0.25mg ozempic 3 weeks ago, the first injection is fine, the 2nd one give me pain in my front tummy that goes to the back left side for 24 hours. Then yesterday my 3rd injection is happening again. Still in pain now but not too painful, just feel like burning pulled muscles under my left rib to my back /shoulder on the left, am worrying it is pancreatitis? I have an appointment with my dr on Monday but i am hoping you can reply if what do you think it is?

Nerdy detail: Scientists say these drugs are thought to tamp down the inflammation that can lead to the destruction of insulin-producing (beta) cells in the pancreas. This is especially important for type-2 diabetics that are taking these medications. (And these medications were originally developed to help type-2 diabetics to control their blood glucose)

Ozemptic is not available in Sweden, and has been hard to come by for months. I've started on Rybelsus and feel a huge difference in satiety. I take it and wait 2 hours before I eat and drink, works great. I'm wondering if the lower results in trails can be due to the human factor, as people who don't take it correctly maybe don't get the same results as a injection, who does the work for a week once taken. 🤷‍♀️

When does the “speed” typically return to normal in terms of the gastric emptying?

Dr., does weight loss via GLP-1 circumvent the normal stress response (cortisol increase, decreased cell turnover, etc) that occurs during weight loss via only strict dieting?

Thank you this was helpful. I've always been confused by the need for the Ozempic which I believe is a GLP-1 Agonists which mean they bind to the receptor for GLP. So why not just give GLP-1 ? is it because the natural form of GLP-1 degrades very quickly while the Ozempic sits on the receptor and stimulates it for hours upon hours? Therefore its long lasting as opposed to the endogenous form of GLP-1. Is my thinking correct?

Can you possibly make a video about the chatter of the Chinese study that came out about the shrinking of the intestine? I have been looking for information but I can’t find much. Kind of freaking out right now. 😅 thanks. If anyone has any other info please let me know.

Dr Dan, you’re propagating bad science on Calories In vs Calories Out. The source of that calorie makes a huge difference in weight control. The human body metabolizes different kinds of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins differently. So, no, just because the number of calories taken in is less than that used does not mean that the body will lose weight.
