They should have put on the brakes a little earlier my mom makes the same mistake parking her mini van.

That was so First attempt in history to land a rocket of this scale from high altitude... I can’t believe they got it so close on their first attempt. Congrats spacex :)

This is what it meant by some "Do not be afraid of failure".

I have a Masters in engineering. They need to land it on a big mattress.

Just another Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly. They went through quite a few Falcon's before they got the bugs worked out. The fact the ship launched, shut down 2 engines and used the 3rd to hold itself in mid air while translating sideways, then shut that one down and used the fins to shift into a horizontal fall, reignited the engines and twisted back to a vertical all on the first flight was impressive. SN9 is already built and ready to test.

the technical term is lithobraking followed by a rapid unscheduled disassembly

Remember it was a flight test not a landing test 🧠

They had far more successes than failures with this flight. Sustained 3 engine flight, long burn time, successful bellyflop, successful aerodynamic control after the flop, successful relight, successful landing pitch up, mostly successful use of the header tanks. They’ll take all that and apply it to SN9 and stick the landing next time!

So close. They just didnt have enough engine thrust. Not bad elon. Go spacex

Should rename this video “Amazing step forward for space travel in successful first test launch of new prototype starship”

SpaceX’s Starship exploded on impact while attempting to land.
That's not the story. The story is in the 6 minutes and 42 seconds of incredible firsts that SpaceX accomplished. Today, we saw incredible things that no other rocket has ever done.

the amount that they got right is fascinating, but media be like "expensive rocket trys to land and goes boom hahaha"

Like the old saying goes, "You've got to crack a lot of eggs to make an omelet"! Awesome experiment more data to a path of perfection!

What they don't tell you is, even commercial aircraft, probably will have at least one crashed prototype per program.

Alright, folks. Gather... I've seen a lot of misinformed comments below so we need to clear up some things.

1. This craft did in fact explode on landing, but this was only a very early test. This is not the same craft that they use to deliver crew to the International Space Station, that is a Falcon-9 rocket. A very different craft for a very different purpose.

2. The falcon 9 also had failed landing attempts of its first stage during early testing. Tests are required to gather data, this explosion was perfectly within expectations.

3. SpaceX has been building multiple versions of this craft. This is not the only one, and no, this will not bankrupt them. Again, this was well within expectations.

4. The video is not fake. The glitch in the camera at the end is because the camera was blown to bits. Also, people change camera angles sometimes. Not sure why they would make a fake video of their own craft exploding due to failure. They paid for it, they tested it, they blew it up. It is almost like doing a crash test of a car. The intent is for a craft like this to be the first to take humans to Mars, and so extensive testing and expected failures are absolutely necessary.

5. The progress of this company is INCREDIBLE and people should really be in awe of what they've accomplished. Landing a Pringles can on its end using rockets can't be easy, and they ALMOST have it.

6. SpaceX is a private company, and the fact that they are this transparent is unheard of.

7. There was no crew.

8. There was no one on the ground because they knew it would probably explode.

9. Innovation is required for us to progress as a species. Just because Falcon-9 works, doesn't mean they should just stop there.

10. Please, if anyone else wants to add any more points do so below. People need to know the real information about what is going on in the world. These headlines are misleading at best.
