I'm not a HVAC Tech but I am a professional Low Voltage Tech and I'll share some tips.
Fine tip Sharpies, all you need is Black and Silver.
White Electrical Tape, comes in handy to label wires and wire locations.
If on a Construction Site you could pick up some Romex sheathing left over from the Electricians and you could slide a piece over a couple of wires that are grouped together and write on it with a Sharpie.

I typically tag my Cables twice. Four inches from the end then measure out the Cable from the end of the Cable at the tip of my Index Finger and thumb to my Elbow then tag it again.

How do you label them inside the box? Each wire is so small once they’ve been unsheathed and separated?

The Rite-on tag dispenser is $99. Really, why use that unless your company picks up this ridiculous cost?

I've used a pack of colored zip ties. If you have more wires than colors you can use more than one tie to create color combos since they're dirt cheap.
