The severity of the Covid crisis facing the NHS has become even clearer — with a record 53,000 new cases reported in 24 hours.

Public Health England said the scale of infections and pressure on hospitals was causing “extreme concern”.

A leading scientific adviser to the UK government said urgent action was needed to prevent a “catastrophe” in the New Year.

There are calls for a delay in the return to school after the Christmas break, to prevent the spread of infections. The armed forces are being drafted in to help with testing in schools.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by health correspondent Catherine Burns and political correspondent Damian Grammaticas.

*"Warning that UK risks “catastrophe” with record number of new Covid infections"* But you closed down Nightingale and the borders are STILL open with travellers not getting checked or quarantined.

No one mentions the grand folly of the Nightingale hospitals. £220 million and either standing empty or already stripped of all fixtures and equipment.

NHS being overwhelmed is what happens every winter - ive been a registered nurse for 17 years. For example the winter 2017-18 was a severe NHS crisis, but I didnt hear anyone calling for lockdowns back then.

People could have locked down completely over Christmas and they'd still say there was record breaking numbers.

Does anyone on here see their testing centre really busy? My local one is deserted every day. Where do they get these figures from?

53, 000 new cases. We could do with stats for necessary hospital admissions as a result of Covid.

'Hospital operating with around 10% fewer beds than usual' to keep patients distanced...💁💁💁 so maybe not more patients just less beds???

When you say 'infections', what you really mean is positive tests from a device not suitable for purpose.

Fear has always been used a tool to control, manpilate and “guide” people actions and beliefs (to their benefit).
