This is pretty much the exact strategy that's ruining competitive dressage (an equestrian sport). No one's doing it right, but the difficulty is so high they let it slide for the big names

This is crazy that they allowed that and it says that he basically wasn’t good enough to compete with his own skills to get to the Olympic trials.

That reminds me of the halfpipe snowboarder who figured they could compete at the least attended events to get enough points for Olympic qualification. They got to the olympics and couldn’t do a single trick. Some praise them for finding the loophole, while everyone else thought it unsporting and that they just looked like an idiot out there compared to the pros.
Stuff like this is why so many other rules get *over* tightened, which weakens sports etc. in general
