In today's Triple-T (Tools, tips and talk) #187, I continue the intermediate bowie knife build series by heat treating and grinding but unfortunately we have a major fail.

Ray Kirk told me once “if you’ve never cracked a knife you’ve never made a knife.”

Man the gain on that was stellar! What a same man... you either succeed or you learn.

Not a failure, a successful opportunity to learn something... Thanks for sharing

Thanks and much respect for showing us your problems. Personally, I greatly appreciate the learning opportunity! Too bad as well, it was a sweet looking blade.

Someday I hope to be able to do forge work and smith blades, but all the content I have watched tells me steel is a temperamental sometimes finicky mistress. Great work and thanks for the transparency showing the 'fail' !

Even though it didn't turn out how you wanted. I've always found the oops to be the best learning experiences. Thanks again Dennis!

I see you made it back from Mexico safe and sound. I really enjoyed meeting you and Jared at blade show I had a really good time. I spent way too much money but oh well 😁

Thanks for showing us the results of what can happen during differential heat treating. No bueno.

Glad I'm not the only one making scrap metal! 🤣

Traditional Katana puts the clay on the bottom, not the top. But watching and trying to do something different is what is great about your videos. Onward and upward as the saying goes.

Any time this happens I always just make myself a short knife. I call them my whoops knives.

Well, you still can make a little chisel knife, right? 🙂 Thank you for sharing!

This series has been timely for me because I'm finally moving from hand tools to using a belt grinder so thank you for all the educational content!
Based on your comments about the hamon, is wrapping the blade in wire before applying the clay just to control the shape and dimension of the hamon - or is there something else to it? I'm wanting to make a tanto soon, so these tips about differential heat treat are good to have!

Yikes, I’ve got a blade in temper right now that I did basically the exact same process as you did here so now I’m worried that it’s cracked too haha! 🤞😂

For what it's worth, since the grain looks fine, I agree that it must have been the clay. Occam's Razor applies. Wait, is there a pun in there somewhere?

Nice to see I am not the only guy to have cracked a blade...sometimes it feels like I am. I have never seen clay stick that much...but I use Rotland black furnace cement for hamons.

🤔out of pure curiosity, what type of oil did you use, Did you agitate the knife(it looked like you did), and how long did you leave the clay on? i tend to scrap it off as fast as possible to help mitigate any autotempering. As I have heard, you dont need to agitate with a quench from a video UK Bladeshow did. And i also dont agitate because I once did a horizontal (i dont like vertical quenching) clay quenches on what was going to be a boning knife...with agitation, and it went in about 5 seconds...which was upsetting since I had forged it down by hand from a piece of 1 inch Hitachi blue round stock(i enjoy doing this anyway, but still it's not easy to get and is costly steel)...and stopped agitating when I clay quench and in general since I only have parks 50 and it is fast without agitation. I always scrape it off as fast as posasble

надо было спуски делать после закалки с хамоном чтобы не лопнуло, лопнуло из за именно такого хамона, если бы хамона было больше и чаще, то трещины не получилось бы на таком тонком спуске...

It's a shame the crack happened. Are you able to put this scrap metal in to a new project?

I have tried Maritime knife supply and it always states that is an unsecured site. I will never buy from an unsecured site.
