How Innovation Can Lead to Climate Adaptation

The threat of climate change drives many people to despair. But the good news is that there’s plenty of evidence that being concerned about the climate doesn’t require panicking about the climate.

While the media is drawn to alarmist stories about extreme climate scenarios … they’re also the least likely scenarios. And while you’d never know it from press coverage, there is a wide array of scientists who are simultaneously concerned about climate change but also want the doomsayers to stop scaring everybody.

There’s other good news as well. Even if the world doesn’t meet its carbon reduction goals, technological innovation means that many of the consequences of climate change likely won’t be as catastrophic as they’re sometimes portrayed.

Rising sea levels? They can often be managed through the use of seawalls or beach restoration. Water shortages? The use of desalination in Israel shows how technology can overcome the problem. Agriculture? Genetic modification of crops has the potential to make them less water intensive. Sweltering cities? A combination of lighter surfaces, more trees, and more water elements can lead to significantly lower temperatures on the hottest days.

The bottom line: Climate change doesn’t mean we’re doomed. And, thanks to innovation, we can be concerned about the climate without succumbing to despair.

Hello! I have been loosing my mind over how to fix what the human race has done to Mother Nature. However I did realize that no everybody will want to help change how we do things. I try to help by taking faster showers to try and preserve clean and natural water, using biodegradable everyday stuff, recycling as much as humanly possible, taking care of nature as much as I possibly can, expand the creekbed nearby so I can collect more rocks for my huge rock collection but also make sure the creek is replenishing some of its own natural stuff. I also try to clean up trash, save as many animals as I can, oh and I hate using paper because of deforestation it makes me depressed so I resolve to using other plant based nature friendly paperish stuff, I also plan on building a tiny house for me and my boyfriend so we don’t take up an actual plot of land that gets rid of the natural habitat. Thanks for making me and other people who worry about climate change feel better!❤

You are right. Panicking is not good and there are ways and technology to limit climate change. In a perfect world we would give drinkable water to everyone from the ocean. However climate change isn’t even at its worst phase yet and even today we can’t give the world water or food. Do we have the means yes but the question is does humanity have the will to actually fight climate change before it is too late.

Also, that "one-third of all species could be extinct" article by USA today isn't really that alarmist, see IPCC WG2, Cross-chapter paper 1 figure 6. We can rescue some of these species but likely not all, and it would probably have to happen quickly.

Good video, I think one reason young people are so concerned about this is that though scientists identified the situation 30 years ago, politicians (especially conservative ones in wealthy countries) have done practically nothing as a response to it, or in the case of conservatives have denied that it even exists or is caused by humans.

So you have an overreaction from the left when there is no balance from the right.

Innovation cannot leave us out of a problem. It doesn’t address the systemic issues that caused it.

Panic or not, it won't change the overall outcome. We are entering the periodic warm periods between ice ages, and the temperature is going to rise, glaciers melt, and icecaps shrink regardless of what mankind does. The cycle will continue and in a few thousand years those in the temperate zone will find themselves up to their butts in ice and snow all year long.

I feel a lot of republican adjacent talking points in this video. Especially the developing countries carbon logic, that’s a big red flag. This video wants you to feel unalarmed not for the sake of your own comfort or mental health but because if you are unalarmed you probably won’t do anything differently.
