PRO TIP: Organize Your Project

We know all too well how exciting it is to begin cutting your story together after you finally finish shooting. But there is a lot of prep that needs to happen first to avoid headaches down the line.
That's why Joey is here to tell you to CLEAN YOUR ROOM (and by room, we mean your project.)

This guide is NOT software specific. You can create your own organization system in any editing program.

Feel free to ask us specific questions directly in the forum!

My editing process is a nightmare and my files are everywhere. It adds entire days to the editing process. Maybe I'll clean my room. Thanks dad!

Excellent. I'm always drilling this into my students heads. Proper logging and media management will make you a better editor. I ask them what is the first thing they do when they're solving puzzles. They get all of the square edge pieces and pieces with similar colors together before they try to put it together. The same applies to projects- you have to organize all of the pieces together (the media) first before you know how they fit together. I would also add that media needs to be renamed after they're imported, otherwise, you'll have folders full of files called and so on, then sub-clip and organize everything into bins. Great vid.

Thank you so much for so many great videos. I love VGHS, and I'm really getting into editing and all sorts of video stuff. Your videos have been really helpful and entertaining. The one on why you shouldn't give up on Black-and-White movies is just an amazing example of how you guys made me see so many things AND from a totally new perspective. Keep doing what you're doing!

This is the start of what could be a great series. Looking forward to the timeline cleanse video & also possibly something that explains the ins and outs of using Premiere and After Effects together. Great stuff!

A sock goes on a foot. FOOTage. Did you intend that?

I would love to see a video similar to this more focused on After Effects, since many of us can get carried away with pre-comping everything and having a single folder for Compositions, and all of them being longer than needed, etc.

Can't wait for the video about managing the Timeline :)

I'm doing a film-related study atm and people don't realize how important it is to organize. Let's hope people learned from you :)

Try not to output to the same folder your source files are coming from. The drive performance will deteriorate, as it's reading and writing. It's also slower, Duh'

So if you must have it all together, export/output to another fast drive, then when done, copy finished files back to project folder. Though I have outputs on other drives.

To stay even more organised.

My Project's room is Avid Media Composer, Cinema 4D and After FX and yup you need to keep your room clean and organized!
and even though 90% of the time I try, that's not to say there aren't areas which are very VERY those areas are kind of a bummer to navigate,
there are files titled 'fdsgfdsgf' (whatever fingers hit my keyboard)
... embarrassing right?
Keep it clean from day 1 folks :)

This is amazing! I upgraded from FCP7 to FCPX however I really want to transition to Adobe Premier.

Are there any good tutorials online or would the great artists at RJFS help a young filmaker out :)
