Sumerian culture was one of the earliest and most influential civilizations in human history. Emerging in southern Mesopotamia around 4500 BCE, the Sumerians developed complex city-states centered around monumental ziggurats dedicated to their gods. They made groundbreaking innovations including cuneiform writing, irrigation systems, the wheel, and mathematical concepts still used today. Sumerian religion was polytheistic, with deities associated with natural forces and celestial bodies. Their literature, including the Epic of Gilgamesh, explored themes of mortality and the human condition. The Sumerians excelled in art, creating intricate sculptures, jewelry, and musical instruments like the lyre. Their social structure was hierarchical, with priest-kings at the top, followed by nobles, commoners, and slaves. Despite eventual conquest by other peoples, Sumerian cultural achievements laid the foundation for subsequent Mesopotamian civilizations and continue to influence our world today.
