It's sad to think of when the last member of a species dies alone

Steve Jobs once said: “death is the single greatest invention of life, because it makes way for the new.”

Extinction is just a lower frequency of events. And death is not the end, it's change.

After Cambrian explosion, it took 540 millions years and 5 major extinctions until mammals took over. That's over half of a billion years of evolution of survivors from mass extinctions. Amazing...

It's not really necessary or unnecessary. That kind of implies that there's a purpose or goal to the whole process. There isn't. It's just happening as time passes. There's no end point. It's not moving towards anything or away from anything for that matter. It's just a thing that is. There is no right to exist. There's no right or wrong way to do it. The outcome doesn't matter.

Let me clarify., , extinction is fine when there is no monopoly happening with our decision making and control on whole eco system, means if we stop it everything shouldn’t just collapse, , there is a reason why diversity is stressed as very important, when it’s gone, sudden events will kill all the few species in mass rather than kill half or whatever while the more adapted ones survive to THEN fill niches

I look at my fossil rock collection, how odd it is to love something so much, it's only a rock pile. Planet earth has the power to bless itself. Thank you for this clip, Mr Cox.

There seemed to be a bit of a gap in his reasoning. Why does it matter if a niche is enabled for a different species? "Good" seems fairly subjective here. Isn't lack of extinction a sign of a balanced ecosystem?

I wonder what the extinction of humanity will make way for...

Species don't exist in nature. They're just arbitrary lines we draw in the gradient of life for categorization purposes.

Yes. This does not give us the right to exterminate other species as we are doing.

I agree it is necessary, but not necessarily that much and fast. Human beings are accelerating the process to a whole new degree and many have been gone for no natural benefits.
