The man who refused to stop fighting. Japan officially surrendered to the U.S. on September 2nd 1945. However, some soldiers wouldn't quit. Hiroo Onoda was the most famous because he continued WW2 for 30 years. He lived in the jungle on Lubang Island in the Philippines. Occasionally, he emerged and skirmished with farmers. He believed that news of a surrender was Allied propaganda. In 1974, adventurer Norio Suzuki tracked him down. But he still wouldn't leave until his commanding officer came to the island and relieved him of duty. Onoda returned to Japan to a hero's welcome. However, the Japanese government removed him from the spotlight because of his radical political views.
