The 959 was incredibly advanced for the time and was basically just a street legal 961 without the sponsor badges. Gotta love group b homologation rules!

959 was my dream car as a kid. Engineering at its 80’s finest

"give me a long enough breaker bar, and a sturdy enough socket, and I shall break that wheel free"
-Archimedes, right after he heard of the super tight Porche wheel nuts

Another great bit of automotive history and engineering insight from Ficarra!

Today I learned that you need a Shelby GT500 engine to put on the 959 wheels

One of my all time favourite cars. What am amazing piece of engineering. Just so you understand, 2.8l engine, 444 HP, 200MPH, 3.7 sec to 60 mph 100kmh WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL GEARBOX WITH AWD, and all of this in 1986. Oh and its technically a 4 seater. Years ahead of its time!!!

Had a customer have one of these wheels ordered after he had cracked his wheel, it was a 6 month wait and about $3000 Australian for a new wheel, when it finally come in I took the new wheel out of the box and put the old one in, I come running in yelling excitedly to the boss that the Porche wheel was here, as the boss turned around I tripped and threw the box and the wheel, it perfectly come smashing out of the box and across the car park, I stood there looking at the boss, him and every other worker had a look of shock on their faces, the boss literally started to cry, I couldn't contain my laughter.

My childhood dream car. In the late-80’s, most kids’ “bedroom wall poster cars” were usually Lamborghinis (Countach) or Ferraris (Testarossa).. My dream car, however, was the 959. And this, despite the fact they weren’t officially sold in America, at least not for many years. The technical details were simply otherworldly, and it remains a model of truly advanced design and visionary use of cutting edge technology and engineering. For this reason, it has aged better than most supercars of the period and has appreciated in value accordingly. I never get sick of hearing about this car, and am admittedly a sucker for any YouTube videos featuring the 959. 🤦

If I ever get a 959 and I see John coming, I am out. He seemed way to excited about bending fenders

They actually use a similar idea in monitoring helicopter blades for cracks. Fill em with argon or something and monitor the pressure.
I had an RC 959 back in the late 80s/early 90s that was actually pretty cool as far as toy RC cars from that era go.
The 959 has always been one of my absolute favorite cars. Although these days I'd probably rather have an F40.

Saw one in real life in Monterey in 2022 at the Indy car championship. Forest green looks amazing on that car.

Had a poster of a 959 on my wall when I was 15. I was 49 when I finally saw one on the street 3 years ago.

Any JDM fans in the house? Show respect to the 959, this car was the inspiration for the GTR coming back and having that amazing Atessa AWD. We got Godzilla because of this car.

You forgot to mention that the wheels are not the same diameter front to rear. They had to do that due to the AWD system

My third favorite car of all time, behind the Z32 TT and the F40.

The 959 was a proof of concept for their four-wheel drive system
