How do I stop files from going to OneDrive

Recently, Microsoft has started to put everything inside Desktop, Documents and Pictures into OneDrive. Maybe, it's a good thing if you got 1 TB storage on OneDrive. But with just 5GB free storage, things would soon start to fill the OneDrive Storage and then you'd start to get annoying messages to subscribe to Microsoft premium membership. Some people might have some important stuffs saved in these folders and it's not a bad idea to pay extra to get a backup of the files. But, I think majority of people save temporary files there. Nowadays, computers have at least 500 GB storage on the C drive. So, 5 GB for backing up 500 GB is definitely not enough. People could always manually add important files to the OneDrive as needed.

So, in this video, I'll show you how to unlink Desktop, Documents and Pictures from OneDrive. Later in the video, I also delete these folders permanently from OneDrive. Just make sure you got a backup of these folders on your PC before deleting them from OneDrive!

Once you stop back up of your folders such as "Desktop", "Documents", and "Pictures" . OneDrive will delete/move the files that are already backed up from your PC to OneDrive Online and OneDrive Folder in your PC. So, I suggest you to copy all these files to somewhere in your PC and once stopped the back up, bring them back to the corresponding folders. Or if you got OneDrive folder on your PC, you could find these files there! So, copy and paste them back to the corresponding folders on your PC from OneDrive folder. After you've stopped the back up, OneDrive will not upload any future files to OneDrive!

I appreciated if you could like and/or subscribe to help others find this video 🙏 If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments below 😊

OneDrive is one of those things that are an amazing concept, but has awful execution. OneDrive is making my otherwise fast PC super slow because it's trying to synchronize god knows how many files all at once and trying to somehow do it with only 5 GB of space. It's a nightmare.

Thanks for the video :)

The solution is simple, yet very helpful. I couldn’t easily figure out what was going on, so thanks a lot for making this step-by-step explanation!

Hi. I'm a random guy that you never met, have no idea who I am, and have no idea about any of my friends or business associates. I run a server room for microsoft and I have access to all the files on those servers anytime I want. It's so nice of you to just put all your personal stuff including your documents and family photos in onedrive so I can look at them whenever I want. Oh, look, nice family you have there watching that brand new tv! And so many cute kids! Wow, look at all those priceless family heirlooms! Gee, thanks microsoft for making the decision to give everyone "free backups".

Thank you! Several games installed have been saving savefiles to Documents/My Games, which had led to OneDrive copying them all too.

Very helpful. Thank you. I need to backup documents (written files) and a few databases and excel files only. All those pics and screen shots are not needed so this helps me know how to set that up. Thanks again.

Thank you. I just got a new HP computer and onedrive took it over for some reason. I use OneNote to take notes and save them to OneDrive. I guess HP had it configure that way. I only have 5GB which should be enough for documents. Maybe I will upgrade at some point but, I don't need downloads, photos, video's or desktop.

I can't find how to stop the Blue recycle arrows in the status column (sync) in every folder and file on my new drive(OS). I installed a new SSD drive and Windows on my PC as my other Windows was a mess, I've now noticed that these Onedrive arrows are in all folders and files, It indicates sync pending but I have no Onedrive cloud icon on the taskbar as I think I disabled it when setting up the OS. So now even though Onedrive is in my Apps list I can't find how to get into it to stop this constant blue arrow sync pending thing.I also tried to uninstall Onedrive from programs and features but it won't allow me to uninstall it. Have I messed up this OS as well now? Microsoft keeps forcing these programs down our collective throats even though most of us don't want anything to do with them as with unwanted updates.
