This video was made as part of HokieBugFest 2017.

When a honey bee forager finds a good resource - usually nectar or pollen - she can communicate the location to her nestmates with the waggle dance. We can view and decode this amazing behavior.

This video was created by Dr. Maggie Couvillon as part of The Bee Group @ VT.

This is a nice, simple way to explain it

Also, other bees will know how much food are there depending on how fast the bee wiggles.

This theory of the interpretation of the bees' waggle dance was published by Karl von Frisch in 1927. He won a Nobel prize for his research. It's a pity the producers of this video did not give von Frisch credit for this discovery. The uninformed would assume that it was a recent discovery by the video makers.

Thank you for this. I am having lessons in bee keeping and wanted to know how to recognise a waggle dance.

I was watching another "bee waggle dance video" and I was scrolling down the comments, and somebody commented, "I should do this as a signal to where the nearest mcDonald's if anybody asks." XD lol

If a bee can fly at 20-30km/h and the distance approx 1-6km, it means the traveling time to the field is up to 0.2-0.3 hour, flying back is same, so at least half an hour. During half hour the Sun moves approx 7°-8° on the sky and the duration of the collecting on the field and dance also up to half an hour, so the total change in Sun's position can be 15°. How they can compensate it?!?

Has this been tested? Have we followed a waggle dance and found bees? This is so interesting

How do the other bees comprehend/receive this information? They must be seeing it on a 2D plane almost, given their size. Combine that with the dozens of other bees around the dancer and it's amazing that any of them can get the info they need from the waggling bee. I guess it just takes one or two to see it from above and then the rest just follow?
