Coronavirus outbreak: Is COVID-19 worse than the flu?

Canadian medical expert Dr. Lukasz explores the differences between the novel coronavirus and the flu, explaining what you should do if you catch COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a lung virus that’s part of a family of coronaviruses that vary in severity, including everything from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) to the common cold.

Symptoms associated with COVID-19 include a runny nose, headache, cough and fever that are similar to flu symptoms, according to a previous Global News report. It’s flu season in Canada, meaning viruses impacting the population are common.

The number of people infected with coronavirus topped 110,000 across the world as of Monday and over 3,800 have died as the outbreak reached more countries and caused more economic damage.

A good rule of thumb is don't look at what people are saying look at what people are doing. China did not shutdown its economy for the regular Flu. This is not the end if the world but we do need to be prepared for some hard times ahead.

l'm in the medical field, my wife is in the medical field... we and everyone we know in the medical field say this is sooo overblown. 45k people in the US die every year in traffic accidents. Should we shut down the roads?

I don't get why so many people attack the question. It seems pretty legit to me. It has the symptoms of the flu or of the cold, it is treated mostly the same way.


The death rate is higher, but as the doctor said: it's debatable. Why? 1) Because a lot of mild cases are treated without even getting to the doctor; 2) Because the statistics get more accurate when the number of occurrences is increased. The number of Coronavirus cases is not enough for a compulsive statistics. It's like comparing a class with 2 students from which one passed the exam and another don't, to a class with 20 students from which 5 didn't pass the exam: it doesn't mean that the first class is worse or the teacher is worse, the numbers are too different to be compared.


Yes, nations are treating it differently than the flu, but I really think (looking at numbers and description) that it is because it is new, so we don't really know what to expect from it.

He makes the point that the death rate is 3.5% of the people - but ONLY of those who present to a medical facility. But in many cases the diagnosis is presumptive not confirmed by testing.

A treatment for Coronavirus already exists and is extremely effective, its based on a cheap and common Malaria medication that has been used for travellers for decades. That the media doesnt inform and update the people while continuing various alarming reports as if there was no cure shows the media are frauds.
