The term Blaxit is a fusion of the words “Black” and “Exit” to refer to Black Americans exiting the U.S. and moving abroad. For many Black Americans, seriously exploring their options overseas provides them with living arrangements at a lower cost of living, access to better & more affordable healthcare, awesome climate, an escape from pervasive racism, cheaper retirement living, and an adventure in a new culture outside of the United States.

We selected these 10 countries based on our own research and information gathered from a collection of online stories from current Black Expats and retirees who are now living in a variety of places in the four corners of the world.

I currently live in Qatar 🇶🇦, and I will say the world is bigger than the US. I encourage brothers and sisters to explore and go where you are treated best.

Hello. I have lived in Madrid, Spain for the past 18 years and have never had any problem with racism. I teach at a university in Madrid and have had no problems there either. However, we must remember that everyone has different experiences in life. There is no sense in arguing with anyone trying to prove someone wrong. To those who have bad experiences in Spain, move on and do not return. Ask yourself what have you learned from the experience. There are many other countries to visit. Find those that bring you joy and forget the ones that brought you grief and heartache. Life is too short to focus on the negative.

Belize, stood out for me. So glad I found this video, I’ve been thinking about moving for years. My daughter graduates from high school this year and I want out of the USA

A growing amount of people, of all races, are moving out of the US for a better life. Especially in recent years due healthcare, cost of living, violence, racism and the government just not giving a care in general about anyone other than the 1%. I truly believe America is in rapid decline at this point and it's better to get out now rather than later if possible.

As I get older and my children go off to college, I'm just so so ready to finally go. I MUST experience something so new before I leave here. I must know how it feels to be released of American culture. This video has inspired me greatly.

You forgot to mention that Belize is an English-speaking country, so there's no language barrier.

Portugal threw me off. I lived there years ago and experienced some of the worst racism of my life. I wonder if these African Americans who live there speak the language or if they live in a bubble. Many Black Portuguese and Brazilians of all races have complained about their treatment.
Spain honestly wasn't much better.
I don't hate the US enough to go somewhere, where I'm not going to be treated with respect. Good luck!

As an African-American I lived in Buenos Aires Argentina for nearly ten years. Here are some countries in South America that you might take a look at also, Brazil 🇧🇷 Uruguay 🇺🇾 Chile 🇨🇱 Ecuador 🇪🇨 and Peru 🇵🇪. Also no one ever seems to mention the South of France its not as expensive as you might think 😉.

Moved to Mexico (Mexico City) from NYC a little over three years ago. I couldn’t be more pleased. 🇲🇽✨

Not that I am seeking solidarity from anyone because, as a Black American (USA) woman (yes I said it and yes it matters), I am accustomed to not receiving basic empathy, however, I am entitled to my feelings based on my experiences like every other human being.

The resentment toward Black USA Americans across the globe is real and it is nasty, including from other African descended people. The USA experience of racism is unique and the most traumatizing of any other in history. While you do not have to agree with our opinions, don't tell us that our experiences are not real or are inflated simply because they are not your experiences. The ignorance and self-hate in this comment section and in the world (including within our own community) is real.

I was raised with intelligence and dignity and I hold my head up high - this means that I do not need to tear down others to lift my own esteem because I know my worth. However, I will not put up with foolishness whether in my own country or abroad because as a daughter of the only true God, freedom was handed to me not by man but by His Spirit.

I am free to move as I please and move I do. Do not tell us to "stay home" or to "go back" without expecting a passionate response and thinking that we must do it because you are intimidated by our strength and honesty. Also, stop tearing us down only to expect us to stand up for you when you too are treated as we are because we don't owe anyone anything but to mind our business.

My value to the world is no less than yours and I will always speak my truth unabashadly whether you attempt to quiet me or not; I implore everyone to do the same within their right and without intentionally hurting others. What comes around always goes around.

I'm a digital nomad and focus more on living in African countries. Ghana was definitely one of my favorites. I didn't get to make it to Senegal but it's on my list!

Many people are leaving the USA in droves. I am glad you did this review, giving people a choice. Blacks and whites have been moving out of the USA, because of cost of living and the health care benefits are better in other countries.

If it wasn’t for economic instability and the corrupt government causing other issues, Haiti would’ve been on that list (I hope it is one day), It was the first Black Country to pass a law that automatically granted any black person that reaches the island freedom and refuge during slavery .A few AAs that were able to reach us were automatically free .I know random lol

Let me add this. If you are going to live in another country, make sure you learn the language of that country. Why? You are respected even more. And it increases you everyday living options. Whether that be shopping or touring. As an African American, I speak fluent Spanish. So when I travel, I am able to tour and shop with confidence in Spanish speaking countries. Also study and learn the countries monetary currency. And lastly, learn the ins and outs, do's and don't and the ropes to jump and those to skip. Living abroad is not the panacea its made out to be unless YOU are ready and have done extensive research. I say this as a military veteran who has traveled extensively and a person who has lived in over 12 foreign countries. I now live in the USA.

I think one thing many Black Americans fail to grasp is that outside of the US you will be seen as an American first and foremost. I'm black British and I and British first as that's my culture. When I travel to Caribbean or S A. I know this and whilst skin colour may be same culturally we are not. To think you'll arrive in a black nation where you don't know the culture, customs, language and assume you'll just fit in is a bit naive.

I have lived in three countries outside the US and traveled to 30 others. Currently, I have lived in Costa Rica for 2 years and it is the most expensive country in Central America and more the Mexico and almost all of Latin America. Costs for housing, cars, electronics, good wine and beef is high.
Remember, Don’t move to any country without living in that country for at least 12 months. Visiting and living there is very different. Check out the country before deciding to move there.

Loving this list, thank you for this. Currently an expat in Milan, I will definitely have to visit some of the places on this list to get a better feel for the country. Thanks again!
