With the a little hydrogen, a few balloons and a couple of makeshift rockets, Valeska Ting launches into an explanation of what the first law of thermodynamics is, and why it matters to our lives.

We've all heard the rule that states that ‘energy cannot be created or destroyed’, or ‘energy is always conserved’. But what does that mean? Chemical engineer Valeska Ting explains.

This was really interesting to watch. More videos like this, explaining concepts with simple experiments.

How amazing that these basic principles describe so much, it's breathtaking.

Is there more information regarding the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and cosmic expansion?

3:30 perhaps its a good idea to explain that is "useful work" in the context of "losing heat energy to the room". Basically, whatever "you want" is useful. If you were trying to heat up the room, then the energy given to the room would be "useful" and that used to create motion would be "wasted"!

"In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!" - that's the most important rule.

Thank you very much for creating this video with very interesting experiments. It really helps in understanding all these laws and their applications in the real world. Thanks again!!!!

The first law of thermodynamics is that you don't talk about thermodynamics.

This was great, thank you! Also, can anyone please tell me the name of the piece of music? (The jazzy one you can imagine in a cafe.) Thanks!
