I have exactly the issue but none of those solutions work on that iPhone - Still displays empty folder ... :-(

Update USB and Apple drives in the Device Manager worked! Thanks!

Unfortunately this is not a cable issue--it's an issue on Apple or Windows. Apple has made there file systems difficult for Windows users to open in the past and I wouldn't be surprised if an update broke something since it's not a priority with apple having switched over to music streaming and cloud storage. If you can get iCloud running on your device, that seems to be the only solution atm. I wanted to use my old iPhone as a backup mp3 player, but that's not gonna work if I can't transfer files from my non itunes music library. Planned obsolescence strikes again it seems.
