I celebrated Labor Day the same way I have for past 5+ years, I went to work.

I've always had to work on labor day- this year I happen to be off due to surgery, otherwise I'd surely be working like always. Labor Day has been a holiday that only serves a portion of the working community as long as I have been alive

Unions are the backbone of the labor movement. Unions and the labor movement have via collective bargaining, worker strikes and political organizing brought us the eight-hour workday, overtime pay, five-day workweeks & weekends, the concept of raises, healthcare benefits, paid vacation time, paid sick leave, unemployment compensation, child labor laws, the minimum wage, social security, OSHA health & safety standards, etc. The labor movement isn't over: minimum wage as a living wage, single-payer universal healthcare, we still have work to do.

one of my high school friend’s parents made him and his brother do all sorts of work during labor day weekend. they were like you need to do labor during labor day. lol

I contend that minimum wage needs to be tied to inflation, which is govt increasing the money supply. This would automatically take care of the unlawful inflation tax levied by govt every time it increases the money supply.

Okay but i'm pretty sure nobody thinks that Labor Day is just about BBQ's and sales. That's like saying the same about the 4th of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, etc. Everyone knows there's some historical reason for having a day off, it's just that in the case of Labor Day, the exact details are less common knowledge than the other days.

I'm actually off today, I didn't want to go to work due to the schedule change, I didn't want to be in early since I'm not a morning person plus I get less sleep.

I celebrated Labor Day the way I’ve done for the last 16 years. I went to work.

Someone had to labor so people can have their student debts paid off.

But the workers themselves are not Marxists and we *_want_* our BBQs !!!

I don't celebrate Labor Day but it's stupid and meaningless to say that BBQ's have nothing to do with Labor Day. People have BBQ's because it's one of the days that they can get together with their loved ones due to always working— so, in fact, it _does_ have something to do with labor 🤦‍♂️ It's no different than the rest of the yearly holidays 🤦‍♂️

"We mean to take things over, we're tired of toil for naught.
Bare scant enough to live on, never a moment for thought.
We want to feel the sunshine, we want to smell the flowers.
We're sure God has willed it, and we mean to have eight hours.
We're summoning our forces from shipyard, shop, and mill:
Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what WE will."
from the Knights of Labor, 1886

And those workers celebrate with backyard BBQ and beer.

So, how do you determine 'fair pay and benefits'?

Nothing says Labor Day like giving your social betters a 10-20 thousand dollar debt relief to students who do not do hard work for a living.
