How To Potty Train Your Bird

Do not be strict with this, There is no way around a bird pooping everywhere and constant as they are birds and its part of owning them. My goal in this vide was for them to just waddle off my shirt and poop on a blanket thats easier for me to clean. If you become strict you risk them becoming constipated because they stop pooping thinking it has to be on command and a constipated bird means a sick bird meaning to the vet! so prevent the headache and do this just lightly. Some birds by nature will move to not poop on you.

I want to put a disclaimer on this video that potty training shouldn’t be extremely strict and the main purpose should be for them to understand not to put on you just walk over somewhere else as making it strict and waiting for a command can cause them to only poop with commands and their poop can be backed up which can cause health issues on its own.

Wow! This method worked just fine! Foe my cockatile he understood the pointing down sign on the 3ed go and kept doing it. Eventually he was fully trained to potty on the spot I wanted him to. Now he does it every time on the right spot! Thanks so much for this tutorial! Keep it up!

I recognized your method and agree. My little GC Conure (5 months old) is difficult to 'potty train', but she is making some progress. She prefers to take a few backward steps before crouching slightly and pooping. She doesn't poop on me as much as before, but now she poops on my bed and pillow, my stand up fan, and the top of my dresser. I'm 90% bedridden from severe, chronic back pain, so her cage is in my bedroom, where I stay all day. Because of my being bedridden, I really need to put a stop to her pooping where I'm lying down, as well as sleeping. I can't be jumping up every 15 minutes to make sure she doesn't poop on my bedsheets or my pillow. Any suggestions?

My bird is a male, rehomed to me at 3 yrs, no one taught him this, started doing it on his own. Took me a bit to realize he was taking potty breaks. Then I though, awww he's flying off me to poop. 😉

Good video, it definitely is possible to potty train a parrot and the floor or a stand is definitely the best place.

We did something similar with Pickles but just used positive reinforcement paired with a que to encourage her to go in certain places.

Lots of people pick a location that's difficult to get to which causes issues, for example the bird holding it in which just causes health issues!
