The fact that the US navy was already in Philipinnes while Spanish there, had no idea they were at war with US. Tell you everything.

Houston had to have thought of this tactic -- because he watched Andrew Jackson in this against all the odds ragtag New Orleans militia (bunch of drunks and half-trained soldiers) manning the walls --facing thousands of professional british soldiers in two seperate columns coming at them. He had to be thinking IF STONEWALL dies -- how the heck am I going to use his death as a rally call.

Hence -- the planning of the Alamo -- barely significant railroad no one was using... in a fort no one could defend against anything. But set out some of the most iconic characters in modern history (our US history - Bowie, Crockett, etc.) It worked!

Coal fires are very common and you have a new type of ship with a inexperienced crew. They let a coal fire get out of control it heated the forward magazine bulkhead full of highly explosive powder for the main guns and kaboom. The whole ship forward of the superstructure was obliderated. Its not a inside job coal fires happen calls coal if left in giant piles will spontaneously combust so you have to move it every few minutes just to keep it from getting hot smouldering and catching fire. This was only the us naveys second steal hulled/ coal powerd war ship. it still had rigging so if they didnt want to mess with the new fangled coal and steam power they could use sails. Not many on board would have had a lot of experience with these types of shops and there tendency to catch fire and blow up.

it may have not been a false flag per se but it was an accident that got skewed to be a Spanish attack on a US ship. How many wars are started with little to no or false provocation? Hmm, too many to count.
