Clemenza realizing in this moment that he will not be the leader is priceless.

I love how he serves them. He pours their glasses before he pours his own. He drinks and eats last too.

Vito was very cunning Tesio and Clemenza didn’t think he could pull it off. He gained their loyalty and respect.

What I love about this scene is it shows how Vito Corleone is essentially a counterpuncher -- he doesn't become a crook until Fanucci gets him fired from delivering groceries; he doesn't become a killer until Fanucci tries to extort money from him and his friends.

But when he has to make a choice, he's direct, ruthless and VERY smart about it.

Such a good detail how Tessio catches on first to Vito’s proposal. “Tessio was always smarter, ” as Michael will tell Tom Hagen years later.

I like the way Clemenza and Tessio were talking down to him until he told them his plan. Then they're thinking, "Holy shit, this guy is serious! He's really gonna do this!" Clemenza especially, sitting frozen with his fork and spoon in mid-air.

Clemenza was probably the most street-wise out of the trio. The way he taps the table as if to say "Tell him!" 😂

It’s crazy how the three grew up together and gone to war together built their empire and to see who stayed loyal and who betrayed.
Sometimes it happens in real life too.

0:59 Good casting on Tessio. I could see him aging into Abe Vigoda

In Mario Puzo's novel, it's implied that Vito had Fanucci figured out as a sort of uncouth Black Hand bully on the fringes of respected families. He had his throat slashed by a group of young hoods who never gave a damn who he was and upon recovery, Fanucci did nothing about it.

So Vito simply knew Fanucci was like a toothless tiger - an almost comical clown in the neighbourhood. A paper tiger just waiting to taken out by a man who had the cojones to do the job.

In The GodFather II, one fact that stood out to me is that Vito Corleone became the leader of the illicit partnership formed with Peter Clemenza and Salvatore Tessio. Tessio and Clemenza were already outlaws when Vito was still an honest man according to "the law". But still he became the boss of the two.

For me two reasons proved that Vito should be Don Corleone, first the fact that he knows how to command his subordinates with respect and wisdom, and second and most important, is that Vito is able to take personal risks to prove that he is right and knows that failing is his fault and his alone.
