The saddest book I have ever read? yea might be. This is a review for Human Acts by Han Kang. Historical fiction? Maybe? All I know is that Han Kang holds my heart in their hands right now.

This video was made before Han Kang received the Nobel award. How insightful you are!

As a Korean and someone old enough to remember the Gwangju Uprising, I have always been curious about how this memory of Gwangju is perceived through the eyes of foreigners. Now, seeing through Han Kang's work that you resonate with our pain, I am very grateful and happy. I believe that through sadness, empathy, and courage, we can unite and make progress together.

Your review on 'Human Acts' is really heartfelt and powerful.
The character Dongho was based on the real person 'Moon Jaehak' who was killed at the age of 16 in May 1980.
Although he was so young he chose to die in the Provincial Office where the militia fought against the rebels' martial law army.
I read the original version in 2016 and am now reading the English translation. It is absolutely visceral and poetic at the same time.
Thanks for the great review you've done here way before Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Who would have thought that the author
Han Kang would win the Nobel Prize in Literature
and now here we are in 2024 as Koreans celebrate her winning the prize, people here
in Korea are going insane over her win and buying all her books.
I am so proud of her and big congratulations to her and her
country. Her writing takes deep into painful human suffering and trauma that we
all humans can relate to especially in this day and age with all the war and suffering
we are literally witnessing right before our eyes.
She is an amazing writer and a wonderful and caring
human being. God bless you Han Kang!! We all love you very much!!

Thanks for your review on this book.
I’m korean but I haven’t even started this book because I know some parts of the story. I read ‘we do not part’ in February this year and I cried a lot so I needed some time away from her book because I know it’s gonna be painful to read her book without a pause. I’m reading her poems these days and I think I’m so blessed that I can understand without any translation.
I think it’s time for me to face this book. Thanks again. You made me cry.

Even though Korea became a democratic country after the Korean War, de fecto authoritarian leaders continue to rule the country.
Because of the sacrifice these patriots made, Korea enjoys more freedom than ever before. There's a saying that freedom is not free. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏 for your comments.

I intend to refuse to read about history during the colonial period (by Japan) and all Korean modern history as a Korean. It is too painful and cruel. It is good to hear that how people from another countries express their feelings about our history. Thank you for reviewing the book.
