Watch Keith Richard's expression when he starts play in open G. He becomes 16 again.

The opening riff to Can't You Hear Me Knocking is one of the most iconic of all time.

Richards opened my mind up. I tuned to G and guitar became a writing tool.

Keith Richards is a treasure. While not having the technical chops like Clapton or Hendrix, he has written some of the most iconic riffs and amazing music of his era. His expression once he tunes the guitar tells the story. Hail Hail! Rock n Roll is documentary that shows Keith's talent, passion and reverence for the roots of Rock when he steps in as music director for a floundering Chuck Berry.

Drop both of your E strings to D, and then drop your A to G. Only take off the low E if you wish to keep it tuned to open G. It’s shaped like an A chord but tuned down a whole step.

He got this from Ry Cooder, who came up with the Honky Tonk Woman riff. The Stones were listening in as he was playing it in the other room during the Let It Bleed sessions.

Viola Caipira (Brazilian Steel Acoustic Guitar), "Rio Abaixo" Tuning (Open G)

It’s kinda like what staind did but ditch the highest string. Add a lower Ab string for the octave. And then drop the Eb string to make drop C#. Endless possibilities and new sounds. Highly recommend staind a guitar work by Mike mushok for those experimenting with new tunings. He has over 20 tunings unique to only him

Once, I broke my low E.
As I was tuning it up and plucking it mindlessly I got to an A, the A way below the E. I stopped. Played for a while. The sound was rich and full. I now had every note of a bass guitar except for the first four. Thirty years later, I still keep it tuned that way: AADGBE .

I tried his tuning to learn a few stones songs. I’m not an expert but I almost felt like he’s been conning people into thinking that he’s a guitarist. Just about everything he’s done is built around the same shape. Granted, nobody else thought of it and it’s easy to say but it’s also very easy to play.
