The easiest way to find top dead centre. TDC. On a Chevy small block or big block

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A TIMING TAB:

1. Take #1 spark plug out, (cylinder closest to driver side signal light)
2. Turn over engine with finger on cylinder hole.
3. When you feel compression building keep turning engine over (clockwise) until you just start to feel the compression give out.
4. Done.

You saved me! I screwed up the timing installing a new distributor. Me and my teenage son got it lined up again by working together. Got the distributor to drop down, and now everything is running perfectly again! In fact, I don't think it ever ran this good before! Thank you!

I just lightly push a kleenex in the plug hole and rotate the crank. When the compression stroke comes around it puffs it right out. Then rotate till the pistion is all the way to tdc.

Damn bro thanks for helping me remember my dad taught me this years ago but there's a part I forgot about and whenever you spend it over to number one compression stroke top dead center your rotor also should point at number one on your distributor cap so like you said you should be at zero timing on compression stroke for cylinder one and rotor and pointing at one as well if not then that means you're 180 out..? Unless I'm misremembering LOL regardless you helped me "hit the nail right on the head" as far as what my dad was teaching me cuz I couldn't remember lol
