Some of these comments... wow.
This is not meant to replace timing marks, it's a time saving device to help you get it on the right rotation and somewhere near tdc. A job it does very well, with many uses.

Yes, excellent tool to have, when my TDC whistle disappeared mysteriously, (Brad, I want my tool back) I quickly made one by simply grabbing a small barrel hiking whistle and attached it to a rubber hose and stuck it in the #1 cylinder plug hole.

When it starts to WHISTLE . . . THAT piston is on it's COMPRESSION STROKE. NOW look for the DAMPER pulley TDC Mark to come around to the TIMING TAB as you continue to SLOWLY ROTATE the Crankshaft . . . until the Crank Mark is at the TDC Timing Tab Mark. You, or a helper, can stick a finger tip snugly over the Spark Plug Hole and rotate the crank until you FEEL THE AIR being pushed OUT on the COMPRESSION STROKE . . . then look for the Crank Mark to come around to the TDC TAB. Either method works, but the WHISTLE is very convenient when you are by yourself. Of course the camshaft distributor drive, GEAR or TAB, is also now at TDC . . . so now you can put the distributor down into its mount hole. If a BLADE tab drive, it can now only be correct, or 180° off. Get the Vacuum Advance pot where you want it with respect to where you want the #1 PLUG WIRE to be in the Dist. CAP. then install and snug the DIST HOLD DOWN CLAMP. If it is a GEAR DRIVEN Distributor . . . then it will install as it rotates into the CAM DISTRIBUTOR GEAR . . . so it can be "out of position" by how many teeth the gear set has. You will have to put the distributor in and out, rotate to next tooth on the CAMSHAFT . . . till you get the ROTOR POINTING WHERE YOU WANT THE #1 Plug TO BE . . . AND THE DISTRIBUTOR BODY and VACUUM ADVANCE CANISTER WHERE IT CLEARS EVERYTHING . . . before you install and SNUG the CLAMP. LATER . . . you will start the Engine. IT WILL BE STARTING AT TDC on #1 . . . then you can set the Distributor TIMING where you want it and TIGHTEN the CLAMP DOWN TIGHT. The WHISTLE IN THE #1 SPARK PLUG HOLE TELLS YOU #1 is on the COMPRESSION STROKE AS YOU SLOWLY TURN THE CRANKSHAFT. THEN YOU EYEBALL THE CRANK TDC MARK TO ALIGN WITH THE "ENGINE" TDC TAB. AUTO SHOP 101.

Did you pull all your spark plugs out?? changing our my leaky timing chain gasket, Just order one of these just in case I throw it outof timing.

When you’re at TDC at this time when the whistle stops. Are the timing marks the cam and crank gears supposed to be facing each other or both lined up in the 12 O’clock position ?

I'm planning to clean my intake valves on a 4 cylinder GDI Mazda engine. Would this help with finding TDC so that the valves are closed on any given cylinder?

Best way is to pull valve cover and look at number 1 valves--believe me

Okay, it whistles only when the crankshaft pulley is at 12 o clock and the camshaft is at 12 o clock??
Isn't it supposed to be 12 o clock on crankshaft and six o clock on the camshaft

Instead of using a breaker bar, how about just turning the ignition by bumping it?

-Great Idea, any chance you might like to share a build blueprint? Would make a sweet afternoon project to through on the lathe and looks like the mill also. I might add a flax hose and a bigger like Foghorn for the hearing impaired.
