🖼 Are tiny tanks considered fish abuse?

I’ve been seeing more and more tiny alcohol bottle & vase “tanks” recently so I thought I’d ask you this: do you consider fish to be decorations?

Nowadays, it’s so normal to see fish in tiny spaces as a decorative piece to liven up a space, but in reality there is war happening in the “tank” that’s not visible to our eyes (ammonia poisoning). I hope this video brings awareness to this issue and allows new fish keepers to realize that these tanks are not suitable for a fish to thrive in.

P.S. I’m setting up a self-sustaining moina culture (fish food) habitat in this video. It has no mechanical filter, heater, or co2. It will be used as a home for the moina to reproduce and grow so I’ll always have a steady supply of live food for the guppies! :)

Pet store worker here: you would be surprised how angry people get when we tell them that a fish requires a certain tank size in order to thrive. My coworkers and I have been screamed at and even physically harrassed when telling people that they can't buy a fish if they have too small of a tank. Please don't abuse your fish. Just because they're cheap and can't emote like other animals doesn't mean you should treat them poorly.

I kind of consider them both- a big tank, planted and scaped with beautiful fish makes a lovely decoration in your home, but they're also pets!

I remember my security guard for my building had a fish and used to put him in a small jar, he had always wanted a fish so when he got it as a treat for himself on his birthday he was overwhelmingly excited, I didn’t want to ruin his happiness telling him, and I swear he loved that dang fish so freaking much, he’d play with it with random stuff and I remember when he collected rocks from outside and washed them to put a few in the bowl. One day, I decided I couldn’t tell him or else it would break his heart to know that the fish has been suffering but I went to a fish shop and bought a tank and few accessories to spice it up!
His face was pure happiness and I was so glad, the fish is still alive and our new neighbors noticed how much he loved him and we told him the story and he even got him a new addition to his fish tank

For me, like any other pet, it's a matter of responsibility of looking after fish, cleaning the tank, proper diet, etc. Like that old saying goes, "Pets are for life, not Christmas".

They aren’t decorations but they can be decorative. They quite literally add life to a home, like cats and dogs.

I mean, they are so gorgeous that it's hard not to say they decorate the home with their presence, but they are still lives you have to take care of.
This reminds me of the reddit post where a bride used fish as centerpieces for her wedding, and most died.
Also, it reminds me about the live turtle charms. Some humans are so cruel.

Our fish have a REALLY BIG tank!!! And there are Pets and decoration, we take really good care of them. ❤🐠🐟❤️

I definitely use them as decoration but they are also living things that deserve respect when adding them to our home.

I mean if you want fish as decoration, just use fake ones. There are some beautiful resin pours with fake fish in them.

I bought my Beta when it was in a small plasic container and named him Blue-tale (cause he had a blue tail and i also gave him lore because why not). I cleaned out my old 25 gallon tank and he lived in there for about 2-3 years until he passed away. He had a filter, plants, sand and colorful gems. He would make such pretty bubble nests all over. I loved him so much.

A clean, planted, well kept, and properly spaced tank is beautiful. I consider it decoration filled with pets.

A fish tank can obviously be used as decoration (think about beautiful fish tank walls in restaurants) but it’s important to treat the fishes well because they’re living creatures
