Firstly the tank is too small for the betta. Secondly bettas aren't decorations, you could've also just put the root in a jar and at last if you gonna put a fish in a tank, especially one that sice you need a break-in periode. Otherwise it's really unstable and the nitrit peak can kill your fish.

That poor betta. Those things are just too stubborn to die so they endure the worst conditions before they finally kick the bucket. Sometimes I wish they weren't as hardy as they are just so they can be treated better.

My boy has a 125L tank with many plants, hiding spots and his favourite floating log. There are a few glowlight tetras, peppered corys and snails. Seeing this makes me sad that not all bettas get a paradise like my boy gets. They're such clever and inquisitive little fish

That fish deserves better. A 10 gallon is not sufficient. It also had nowhere to hide or any enrichment

This is a really really good idea I do the same thing people are saying this is bad rip to the fish but in reality you’re doing the fish good the potato is sucking out nitrate and ammonia making the water safe for the fish but the only thing I would recommend is getting a bigger tank and topping off the water, but other than that this is a good idea
