If you have ever experienced a short, transient spike in your tinnitus, chances are that it may be Transient Ear Noise. Transient ear noise typically lasts between 5 and 60 seconds, and is generally only present in one ear at a time. Watch this video to learn the difference between TEN and tinnitus.

I've been having these for a while, they happen few times a day. I have gone trough really stressful times, but they are not really distracting me in any way, just interesting and last like 5 seconds.

Huh, I've had these periods of loud, high pitched ringing since I was a kid. I wonder if mine is mainly all due to stress and trauma. When I was a kid, I noticed it most commonly at night and in one ear like you said. I'm 25 and it still happens sometimes either at night or sometimes when I'm just living my life

I occasionally get muffled hearing in one ear for less than 1 second which is always followed by transient ear noise for 30-60 seconds. I recall reading that this could be due to involuntary muscle contraction of one of the tiny muscles that stabilize the tympanic membrane, and in recent years I have experienced occasional fasciculations of my skeletal muscles.

A question to everyone suffering this phenomenon. Do you a have an
Sudden ear fullness sensation before or during the spike?

Mine is usually as it follows: hearing muffled with ear fullness (1 or 2 seconds) and a pure tone tinnitus that lasts, usually, less than 1 minute.

What it most scares me, is that I can have two or three per day 😥

Thanks, Dr. Ben. I had a feeling this is a commonly experienced phenomenon. It would be nice to get some of the scientific basis for it. The hair cells are a finely tuned regenerative oscillator so if they get damaged, they are going to whistle like a broken radio, but I really don't know anything about it. To me, the transient ear noise feels like a cramp in my calf as it goes away after a little while, leaving some soreness behind.

Thanks, so basically nothing to worry about! I've had this even in my teens. Lasts for like 5 seconds and happens once every 2 months id guess

any google searches for "transient ear noise" lead only to your website. It doesn't exist as a standalone medical term.

I've had tinnitus for years, then after the Pfizer shots it got a lot louder. Another side effect are these short ringing sensations.. luckily they nearly always go away within a few seconds but the downside is that they are quite frequent. A few months ago they were almost every day vs only occasionally in the past.

I get a sudden spike in my right ear every once in a while. My ear immediately feels muffled and begins a hissing noise. It’s very annoying. Only this doesn’t last for a minute or less. It usually lasts a few hours. Last time it lasted all day, then as my ear began to clear, I heard a ringing that I thought was going to be my new friend. But thankfully everything went back to baseline in the morning and the new ringing was gone. It’s something I don’t understand because it comes out of nowhere.

Great many thanks, I have ongoing tinnitus probably from my work as a musician. Also, I get the transient ringing. Usually it seems to relate to extra noise exposure in one of my ears. It's quite confusing but your video helped put my mind at ease. Thankyou

My tinnitus used to be only occasional, even after chemo with cisplatin, until I contracted the omicron variant of covid. Now, it's constant in my left ear. Sometimes quieter, sometimes louder, but always there.

I have had these just recently. I had acoustic trauma in an mri machine, I was sent in without earplugs. Very loud tinnitus resulted from that night and has persisted for three weeks. I have hoped it was my brain healing something as I never had it before now, and it has just been in the last week. I have been advised that acoustic trauma can be a month long recovery. Fingers crossed in a week I will see something. Considering legal action.

I get this at the same time with a dropout in hearing of the same ear. It comes back after 30-60 seconds similar to the video. I suspect it's fluctuations in circulation and blood flow around the auditory nerves

I started worrying about my hearing in 1988. I can honestly say that the worry has destroyed my life. I get these transient attacks and I just go into meltdown and total panic. I have just had one 30 mins ago so I reach for my ear defenders. I have worried every single day since Jan 1988 when a thought came into my head one day in Jan 88. I have tinnitus and mild hearing loss at 4K. Tried CBT and all the Mind stuff but nothing takes away that fear that one day something bad will happen. I am now 65 and live in constant fear.

I know this is embarrassing, but I discovered one thing that truly triggers me Ear Transient Noise: An Orgasm. A strong one made me feel deaf, ear fullness and ringing for 60 seconds and I panicked. This happened to me many times, right after the act. So I can totally correlate it.

I have it. It happens to me every once in a while. It's just comes for a few seconds in one ear and then it goes. It's not happening much just sometimes.

Interesting. Thanks! I get these regularly, never looked into it. Maybe once a week on average.

Another name is SBUTT - or Sudden Brief Unilateral Tapering Tinnitus
