Actually it's legal to drink any kind of alcohol as soon as you turn 14, as long as you get it from your parents.
Only if you want to buy it yourself you need to be 16.

As a German I can say that you won't ever see a 16y German girl sitting alone drinking beer, we would still se that as weird drinking behavior.
When you are with friends though, usually they will have big "Kasten" full of beer

When I lived in Germany as an American at 14, if you had parents permission at a restaurant, you could drink beer. Atleast that’s how it was in the state of Bavaria

Maybe this comes from beer being seen as liquid bread and a real meal in the middle ages. Was it different in England or did the settlers just lose that view?

In Denmark you can drink at any age, but you have to be 16 before you can buy beer and wine and 18 for stronger alcohol

Fun fact you can drink at 5 in the uk as long as it in the house and your parents say it’s ok

Same in Switzerland. Cigarettes used to be legal at 16 in some cantons as well but I beleive the national age has gone up to 18 now. Beer and wine can be legally purchased in shops at 16 too.

Same thing in London, I went there when I was 15 and ordered a glass of cider pretty much everywhere I went. Good times.
