Forrest Gump: Just felt like running

What’s happening in this Forrest Gump movie clip?
Sitting on a bench waiting for his bus, Forrest (Tom Hanks) tells the story of how he ran for years through the states of America just because he felt like it.

What’s the movie Forrest Gump about?
Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother, Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam, Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp, and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

Love how they had come up with a bunch of reasons why he was doing it and his reason was because fuck it why not lol.

The one thing that always bothered me about this scene is around 2:58 when the news anchor refers to Forrest as a gardener. He’s a CEO of a major fortune 500 company with Bubba Gump, a war hero, and former all american football athlete, you’d think any half decent newscast could figure this out.

I always really liked the woman who sat with Forrest on the bench. She took time out of her day, just to sit with him and listen to his story. What a genuine person.

Can you imagine the training an actor would have to go through to run across the entire USA? Tom Hanks is insane, cant believe he did it for a movie. I know he got paid a ton, but no thanks im not doing that.

I'd like to think that this running phase of his was him venting out everything. He has settled, he made it. He survived a war, a hurricane, lived through so many eventful parts of his life. Jenny just left him. His mom passed away. Part of him feels as empty as the house he has. Part of him still felt... unfulfilled.

So he got up and ran. He ran, like when he did when he broke out of his leg braces. It was what gave him freedom. It was the event that started his path in life. And he ran. Alone with his thoughts, witnessing America. Reflecting on his life. On the people he met. On his accomplishments. He didn't fully understand everything, but he knows hes been through a lot.

That's my take on this. I'm probably wrong, but that's how I've always viewed this. He's finally clearing his head after everything we bore witness to in his life.

The older I get, the more I relate to this scene.
He could do that, because he had money, and people taking care of his home, his business and his finances.
If I had all that. I’d take off right now.

I can't imagine the internet shattering memes if someone did this in the modern day. Running for years, crossing the country multiple times, and when someone finally gets an answer out of them as to why they've been doing it the whole time, all they say is "I just felt like running".

Funny story: this scene actually saved me from a severe depression once. I was suffering immensely with anxiety at one point in my life and, immediately after I had a panic attack, I remembered this movie, and the fact that Forrest started to run to heal his emotional wounds (loss of his mother, Jenny, being alone, etc). I did the same on that day: put a pair of running shoes and just ran on the streets. It's something I do to this day, every time I feel beaten or anxious. So yeah, thank you, Forrest.

This scene is philosophically profound! Gump is a simple man, he doesn't confuse himself with trivial details. He just does what he feels to be right. He just felt like running, so he did! And it took him places, so he just kept going!

fun fact: Tom Hanks improvised running all the way across America. The cameras just kept rolling
