I love the comment, "Making AI art makes you no more an artist than ordering a Big Mac makes you a chef." That is the best way to sum it all up. May I use this quote and credit you?

A friend told AI to make an image like a specific piece of his work by title and artist name and it made several poor knock offs in a minute. But you can see how they used his piece as the starting point. He is not happy.

I’m a portrait artist and I have a computer science degree… my mom died in September and left me buried in debt, and I took on a lot of portrait and character commissions for Christmas hoping to catch up— and that’s when the prequel boom happened. Almost every job canceled or requested their half up front back, or just hit PayPal for a cancel — which sided with them. I know so many people who have had the same things happen to them. I hate my physical appearance so I was refusing to do the content thing myself, but I feel like I just don’t have a choice anymore.

For many people, art is simply an end product. AI is automating the "chore" of creation for them.
Artists will always be able to create, and physical art will probably retain its value (oil paintings, etc...)

I see all these IG accounts posting AI art. Am I supposed to congratulate them on all this? Same thing as using gear and posting muscle pics.

Very well put. I was recently in a Twitter space that turned into a debate about AI art. Seems to be a lot of confident ignorance coming from those “proud” of their AI art. It’s gonna backfire though and I have my reasons for believing that.

Well there are pros and cons of AI art and AI in general, but it's happening and that's the most important point. Every industry experiences technological advances at some point, if you are good at your job, then there is no reason for panic, the best way is to use AI as a tool to make some things easier and faster, there is no point in ''complaining''.
You simply have to keep up with the times so as not to fall behind and even so real art still has advantages.

There is a danger that we will lower our standards and accept AI art as being equal to traditionally created "human" art.

Finally. Someone who isn't defending the blatant insult to actual artists we call AI. People who defend AI are probably using it themselves and don't like having their nonexistent creativity shown.

Ai "art" should be referred to as "ai generated image" nothing more because that is all it is.

Half the reason I love a piece of art is marveling that someone made it, for better or worse; wondering about the process and decision making. AI art is JUST consumption, whether you are making it or consuming it. I'll go on Pinterest for reference (I'm an artist), and feel so sad when I find artwork that I absolutely love and am initially impressed by, that was made by AI...like...what am I doing? Why am I bothering? It's a very confusing time to be an artist.

Dries, may i ask you a personal question? I was in the process of opening my own studio. I wanted a bigger place to create and to make a dpace for others to come in and create too. My prayer was being answered to be able to bring art to my community so that others could experience art in way that I did and find relief from anxiety, depression, etc.... Art helps me feel closer to the Lord and truly made my heart and soul smile. I felt like I was finally finding myself and so close to doing exactly what God wanted me to do. I was going to have free classes for veterans, senior citizens w/dementia (senior citizen center just down the road), and have classes for beginners to try different medias and experience art in a way that normally they couldn't do without spending a lot of money. I was so full of joy.
My husband suddenly put the brakes on it, broke the entire deal, and cancelled it all because he "doesn't understand" or "get it". Every since, I cant. I feel so broken inside. I can't approach a canvas without feeling like an idiot or a failure....

How do you bring yourself back? Find yourself again somehow? Have you ever lost yourself along your journey? I am trying but every time I paint, I hate it. I am to the point that i am genuinely considering the idea of selling everything and just be done.

I'm sorry this is so long. I genuinely hope you don't get usoet or annoyed by this question. I'm just at the end of my rope. I am the Creative Director of Vacation Bible School in June, and I do not have a creative thought in myself any longer. 😫😫

There's nothing we can do about it though 😢

Couldn't agree more, Dries. Thank you for articulating something I've been concerned about for quite a while. You can easily go down a rabbit hole in discussions about AI and copyright (issues I'm having to deal with right now, as a matter of fact 🫣), and we are ALL prompt engineers, hahaha! If I go to a coffee vending machine, I enter a 'prompt' when i select the type of coffee, add extra sugar (😎) and milk. Did I make the coffee? No, I did not - the machine did. It's a simplistic analogy, but it illustrates the point. I think your observation on cognitive decline is critical - if we abrogate responsibility for the choices we make, what on 🌎 are our hippocampuses for? Happy to use AI as a workflow tool, but not to make decisions for me.
Otherwise, what's the point? Critical thinking gives us enormous agency as human beings, yet we persist in defaulting to what is easy.
My apologies to everyone & to you, Dries, if this turned into the ravings of a madwoman 🤪😤😥

Totally agree with you. Take GPS for eg, now I have no ability to figure out how to get to a new location without GPS. Even using public transport is much easier using google map to tell u which train to get (though I still get on the wrong train!). Copyright is an interesting issue. In the past hundred of yrs ago it did not exist and everyone kind of copied each other in both music and art. But it kind of worked, probably because one stil’ needed hard hands on work, not copy and past.. And there was no internet then to massively reproduce images etc.

Although I am not good at drawing a straight line. I totally agree about AI and as artists I feel we need to stop it in its tracks

Excellent points! I have decided to stop posting my art online. I know that I cannot do anything about the art that was already stolen by these AI art generators and posts but at least I can protect my newer art. Thank you for this video. This is an important topic.

Hard part about it is that people using ai are not producing truly inspiring art... They just prompt artistic style of an artist and say they made it.... I think we'll end up regurgitating old beautiful pictures without artistic changes or improvement.... In a world where you can claim you're an artist without really involving your whole self, perception and intelligence, in it, skills and all... There is no point in making art... Beauty is our guide to wholeness. makes us strive to be greater... If ai artist can't grasp that, they seriously don't know why true artist, who honed their style, do what they do... Van Gogh will never be van Gogh if he just prompted old art pieces
