Common fertility medications explained by Pharmacist on what you need to know.

Today we have our Pharmacist Ann-marie de Melim from Vitalab Fertility Clinic in Sandton discussing all we need to know around the common fertility medications used within artificial reproductive technologies such as IVF for patients during their infertility treatment cycles.

We will discuss the many different medications that can be used within fertility treatment, keeping in mind that treatment plans should be individualized and thus meaning the medications, the doses and the method of administration can differ patient to patient.

The birth control pill is utilized often prior to starting a treatment cycle for patients as this prevents ovulation from occurring and allows accurate date planning. The majority of the medications prescribed for treatments such as IVF, ICSI, IUI, AI and more are self-administered injectable medications.

The purpose of the majority of the medication used is to stimulate the ovaries for the production of eggs, prevention of premature ovulation / releasing of eggs, and triggering the ovulation when desired for egg collection. In summary, the majority of the medications used are to promote fertility in some way, even though they have subtle differences and mechanisms of action.

Vitalab’s YouTube Channel tries to provide you with the best medical information around infertility, recurrent miscarriages or other just trying to conceive (TTC) topics. We have tried to cover infertility testing, fertility treatments, fertility medications and fertility treatments like IUI and IVF (in vitro fertilization).
