Having watched Rikki-Tikki-Tavi as a wee lad, I was able to point out the connection between Zangoose and Seviper right away.

The purple claws actually appeared black on the GBA screen. The purple only appears due to emulators being too "perfect" in rendering the actual sprites, but the games were designed around the limitations of the older screens. This also happens with Dratini in the gen 3 games, making it appear more purple in emulators, while actual GBAs will show the typical blue. Would've been cool if the purple was intentional, but considering the official art only ever uses black, it definitely appears to just be a result of emulators.

"why did I always choose to play as a girl" mood.. or well I felt too nervous to and looked at it longingly. Funny enough I finally decided to play as a girl(both in the game and irl) right around the time pokemon announced X and Y and thus the fairy type... Good times. Good memories. Very fitting.

I had seen the animation of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi when I was a kid, so this was one of those rare instances where I immediately got what the rivalry was about.

What made it worse is that if you never knew that Jessie released her Arbok, you would think “oh her Arbok evolved to Seviper.” That was definitely me😅 Because of this wrong quiz I genuinely thought Jessie’s Arbok evolved

Well through all of this, you might be happy to know that there were more children who knew this than you probably think. There is a book in the American education system called Rikki-Tikki-Tavi that kids might be told to learn. It told a whole "rivalry" between the animals in a child friendly way. I was one of those kids who had the pleasure of learning this. And the moment i made the connection, my mind was BLOWN!

And yes, knowing this as a kid was SUPER fulfilling and made me enjoy gen 3 so much more :)

god I'm so glad you mentioned the matching markings, it bothered me so much that they changed zangoose so he didn't match seviper anymore, it was one of my favorite things as a kid, I've been trying to get shiny versions of them just because they still have that detail

Also fun fact, mongooses were brought to Okinawa to curb the population of Habu snakes but they ended up decimating the local Okinawa rail bird population instead because the bird is flightless.
