'Will worsen crisis': Why India's wheat export ban move has irked G7 nations

Agriculture ministers from the Group of Seven industrialised nations on Saturday condemned India's decision to ban unapproved wheat exports after the country was hit by a punishing heatwave. India on Saturday banned wheat exports without prior government approval after recent scorching temperatures hit production, in a blow to countries affected by supply shortages because of the war in Ukraine. Before the invasion, Ukraine exported 4.5 million tonnes of agricultural produce per month through its ports. But with the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and others cut off from the world by Russian warships, the supply can only travel on congested land routes that are much less efficient. Germany is not commenting out of concern for Bangladesh and Nepal (predominantly rice eating countries), but is concerned about price rise in Europe (wheat eating) . What does Europe thinks, everyone around the world is

Perhaps Europe should restrict their beer production to supply grains to the needy.

Bharat did not completely banned wheat export. The ban is on private players who were hoarding in large scale to jack up prices. If a country needs to make a wheat purchase it can now only be done with government to government to keep tab on wheat stock.

I find it incredible the G7 countries promoting a long war in Ukraine instead of promoting peace. This resulted in high inflation and generates a world food shortage but they have the nerve to criticise India for protecting the food supply for its citizens.

When the covid broke out US kept the vaccines for itself but the rest of the G7 kept their mouth shut then.

Don't worry about Bangladesh. Our principle food is rice, not bread. And Indian officials have said, they will ensure the needs of their neighbours. So we are safe.
It is high time western countries should start worrying about themselves.

India hasn't started the war. It isn't responsible for the global wheat shortage. India will try its best to feed the needy, but India has responsible to feed its own citizen first. India shouldn't be ashamed to keep its own interests first with any guilt. Even USA stopped export of HCQ and that too in pandemic, then no one had guts to criticize USA, because USA is father of European Union and the west.

A nation's first responsibility is its citizens.
Let all those commenting on India look into the mirror and reflect why this crisis came about. If every country is like India, peace loving and nonviolent the world would be a much better place for all. India has always been benevolent but has to keep its domestic constraints in view.

The Europe continues to buy Russian oil, can’t force OPEC neither to produce more nor to lower prices of oil, when it came to COVID vaccinations everyone of them was hoarding them for themselves but when it comes to India, it can’t think about its own people first .

As a Nepalese, I only want to say that our country is predominantly a rice consuming nation. The only people consuming wheat are those people who really favours wheat over rice, which ma be due to diet or health related reasons. Therefore, the export ban may not cause any significant effect to our country. I'm just shocked to hear lies and fear mongering in the name of my country in order to pursue their narratives and create hostility among people.

German Minister seems very concerned for Nepal and Bangladesh. It would've been good if he showed same concern back at 1971.

They never said anything when India sent thousands of tons of wheat to Afganistan and Ukraine for humanitarian aid and now shamelessly criticised us when we put our interest first, which western countries have done all the time (like not banning russian oil while telling the whole world to do so).
"Their shamelessness is laughable."

When India has provided a reason, why is it so difficult to understand that? Isn't it good that India is not being a liability? What happens to the 'responsibility' when Sanctions are imposed on nations whose innocent citizens are not directly involved in their political blunders? India has also provided aid, why is that not taken into account? G7 wants to control India by shaming for responsibilities? . . Don't they realize responsibility cannot be separated from position of power gathered. India is not a G7, so the shame lies with G7 not India.

India restricted wheat exports to stop “manipulators from China".Chinese traders were trying to manipulate the global market and Indian wheat will now go to needy countries.
India wants to ensure fair proper use of Indian wheat stocks to address global needs, particularly of the most needy countries. The move will crush attempts to hoard Indian wheat for price manipulation and the decision will counter food inflation.

Even though it will increase food prices, I think India made a smart move. With a huge population and an impending food availability problem caused by the Russia0Ukraine war and aggravated by mindless Western sanctions, India has to look after its future first. After looting and destroying former colonies for centuries they are lecturing India to be responsible. European countries have to pay for all the sins they committed in their former colonies and their continuing folly of supporting US policies.

When they don’t read entire report but just title of report .
No wonder Incompetency is everywhere. It’s their war why should our people suffer.

India does not have to answer every Tom, Dick and Harry in the West. India is not responsible for starting the war in Ukraine, nor for imposing sanctions. India's interests are paramount. G7 can take a hike.

I remember that lesson of History and Civics. When USA send their worst quality Wheat to India at times of Crisis in 1965.

And now we are able to get these westerners on their knees...

APJ Abdul Kalam rightly predicted after 2020.. India's Age will come...

We are providing medicines, we are providing food, we are providing Software and services, we are providing Vaccines, we are providing loans(at least to neighbouring nations)🙏🙏
