I've owned the 3rd generation Apple TV for nearly two years, and I didn't know this. I checked, and apple music was not set on lossless audio. Thank you very much!!!

My GOODNESS!! Thank you Gene. I am a stickler for these things and I simply cannot believe I missed this. You’re right, it’s buried. Thank you for these invaluable tips videos.

I've learned over time that the mastering of the actual music is far more important than bitrate. Now, having just said that Lossless 24bit/48kHz is a huge step up from 256 AAC and is a welcome bit of news.

Very helpful video. I Was searching for this setting for weeks. Apple has no official video on this😢. Thank you.

As an audiophile, what do you use to convert the audio to speakers? I noticed Apple TV doesn't have an audio output. So you're dependent on the DAC from your tv? Or are there other options?

Hey Gene .. my audio setting was on "High Quality" which I changed to "Lossless".. Thanks for the video 👍👍
meanwhile, there's a slight modification to be done in your video: its Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality .. and not Settings > General > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.

Gene or any of the members, can you address this question. I have lossless in my "iTunes Library", which I can stream into my Apple TV connected to my AVR. Will the Apple TV stream lossless from my library?

With all else equal (Apple music settings etc), will Apple TV 4K provide better sound quality than AirPlay2 via an iPhone - 2 channels music listening?

Gene! Thank you. I was at Lossy and I didn’t know of this setting. Now it’s time to listen to music for the rest of the day. 😂

Hey Gene, in Step 3 you can take out “system”, can just go settings to apps to music then audio quality

I've used both ATV4K from 2021 to the most recent. HDMI plugged into my Yamaha rx-a4a. AppleTV 4k has never ran sampling above 48KHZ. In addition, Dolby Atmos on ATV 4K streams at 48khz by way of ATMOS/PCM, not Dolby Digital or DD+. However, you could disable Dolby Atmos even is the track is Dolby Atmos, the playback will be 5.1. surround if Dolby Atmos is disabled. By the way, Yamaha does playback 24/48, 24/96 and 24/192 when streaming from Amazon Music through Fire Cube products, Quobuz, and Tidal through Nvidia Shield.

Hi I am new to all the hi-res audio, I have an apple TV 4k but how do I connect it to my audio system? it only has an HDMI output which is connected into my tv, I have a Marantz M-CR612 would connecting my TV trough an optical cable to my receiver work? or do I need to purchase an AV receiver/separator?

Thanks!!!
But can I give command to Apple TV through my phone, or I must play the music only from Apple TV remote control?

Sorry, it looks like it seems obvious to all of you but how do you connect the Apple TV to your audio system without going through your TV which most likely doesn't output 24bits/48khz ? I actually thought it was the point of the video.

Thanks, Gene! Didn’t realize I was streaming lossy music. Made a big difference in my system.

Thanks for posting this video. Yes, both of my AppleTV units were not set for Lossless music.

Now the next step for me is to get an audio input preamp to take the HDMI from my AppleTV and feed it into my stereo. I have an old style high quality audio system which I plan to retain, but I just need an add-on to take the HDMI output from the AppleTV and use its DAC to put out an analog audio signal to feed into an AUX input.

Any reasonably priced recommendations?

Wow, glad I stumbled onto your channel. Now subscribed.

In a similar vein, I use my old spare iPhone to extract lossless using Apple’s CCK and a DAC like the Dragonfly.

Now with my USB-C iPhone 15, my primary iPhone, how do I do this? I’ve read one article that said I needed to change USB settings or something? As you love Apple Music, I’m hoping you have the answer.

Thanks.
