I'd love to pay for these kinds of updates but all my money is going to my insurance 🙃

Put in over $60k in upgrades and yet my insurance still doubled! No matter what you do here your insurance will still go up!

To "harden the home to the strongest standards" (as the news anchor mentioned) does NOT solve the real problem, which is the constant home insurance high prices. This is an insult to each and every floridian homeowner.

I’ve listen to the man speak about the homeowners responsibility to maintain a home. I live in an older home that has completely been renovated to modern standards and my insurance company told me they weren’t gonna deal in Florida anymore and I had to find someone else I could not even find insurance, because they said my roof had to be less than six years old and my air conditioner was too old. Do you never going to stay ahead of the insurance companies, and now my premiums are more than doubled and I can’t afford to keep my home maintained anymore now that I’m retired. The only way out for me is to move out of Florida.

The price gouging in Florida is insane, people flat out are trying to rob renters and as mentioned the places are no good, old/rundown and extremely small.

Between homeowners insurance, property taxes, wasd, fpl, comcast/Xfinity, tolls, gas, cell, food, groceries and everything else I'm leaving out, who can afford to live here anymore...

I had a insurance claim. And was forced to use there contractors. I showed them quotes 10 to 15 thousand dollars cheaper than there preferred contractors. What's that tell ya they were over paying and or someone was getting kick backs.

And where are people supposed to get the money to make all these very expensive improvements to the structual integrity of their homes?

Yes property insurance has become like a second mortgage.
They are ripping off Florida residents.

It’s sad that not only people are leaving to have better but DeSantis has made it worse for home owners who is still in need of help through out Florida after those bad storms that had came with flooding and homes being destroyed during that time DeSantis didn’t even want to ask for help from President Biden it had taken a while so that he DeSantis could swallow his pride to ask for help it hasn’t gotten better but worst with this governor how can he run for president when he can’t even govern that state of Florida just think if he gets into office what will happen to the whole state’s and even the nation that’s something to think about before anybody votes for 🃏

Citizen's dropped my homeowner's insurance. I had to scramble to find a small company in Jupiter to insure the house. I decided that Florida is just a giant game of musical chairs. When the music stops no one will insure it and you loose! I left Florida.

How about prohibiting the insurance companies from making bad investments during good times (i.e. no disasters)? How about prohibiting them from creating "Florida only" subsidiaries which funnel their profits to the parent company to make it look like the Florida only sunsidiary doesnt have enough money to payout claims? Litigation is necessary when insurance companies engage in bad faith. Remember how limiting punitive damages and making it harder to file malpractice claims was going to lower malpractice insurance rates and thereby lower medical costs? How'd that work out? How are people supposed to spend 10's of thousands of dollars to "harden their home" when they can barely get by? Why are the builders allowed to make homes that require the individual to pay thousands more to make the insurance company happy? How are people supposed to pay to harden their home when the insurance company raises its rates? The insurance companies should give people a chance and be upfront with them before raising their rates. I.e., "We'll give you 3 years to do XYZ to your home and if you do, we'll lower your rate to "X" Otherwise we'll raise it to "Y" after 3 years."

These are all great tips to improve home resilience but they are meaningless if the insurance costs are still unaffordable.

I remember being told back in the 80's, while training as an insurance salesperson that the insurance industry was one of the biggest ripoffs in the country. It encompassed every area of the insurance industry, no matter what. I'll never forget it.

We have impact windows and put in a new roof in October. We do not live in a flood zone, yet our insurance went from $4500 to $6200 in December. We were told it was because of the last hurricane that hit the West coast (we were unaffected). Meanwhile, the state gets emergency funds to levy the costs. So why did my insurance jump almost 50% (no claims btw). Our ONLY choice is Citizens because our home was built before 2000. I can't even imagine how much it will increase this year because they can charge whatever they want. We've already upgraded our house structurally, and it didn't make a difference.
