I just finished Scorpion Down by Ed Offley. At the end the author posits that the USS Scorpion was the victim of a Soviet submarine attack. Supposedly, this was in retaliation for the sinking of the Soviet K19 in the central Pacific one month earlier that the USSR/Russia still blame on the United States. This all happened in 1968. The Soviets cite an American submarine in port shortly following this sinking of the K19 that appeared to be in a collision. It was battered.

The USA was very aggressive in using its nuclear submarines to gather intelligence throughout the Cold War. Would the US Navy be this aggressive post Cold War when gathering intelligence on the Russian Navy?
