So I dunno if anyone will read this. But if you’ve played Skyrim and truly know what bethesda has always done for lockpicking. Then hear me out. After new Vegas and fallout 3 it’s been the same mechanic. The trick is to memorize those sweet spots for novice, mainly advanced because those are the most repeated just with a smaller window then novice. Then the masters because expert is always the same three spots and two of them are near identical to advanced. Master only has three or four just depends on your irl luck as it’s normally the same two. For novice it’s always gonna be right where you start (so don’t move the pick at all. And then move it a bit to the right just a few hairs to get it. It’ll almost never be exactly where it spawns unless you again have perks or irl luck. The next spot is to the right of the scratched on X on the lock. The next is either far left or far right and the final one would be somewhere in between far right and the middle. That one’s the least likely to pop up as it’s way too easy to have all the time. Advanced is tricky, you have the left side middle of the scratched out X. Then three or four hairs away from the middle on either side. Or far right. Never anything in between. That’s why it’s the best to memorize. After that it’s kinda easy. Expert is actually harder then master as I has the random fourth spot. That’s the far left but it could be on the right or the left of the scratched on X. Then it’s to the right a few hairs from the middle but that’s where the rare instance comes in where you get the left a few hairs from the middle. Then far right as the last for expert. For master it is always near the X somewhere right or left. Then the middle or a few paces either side (that’s where this guys tips about just tapping to test it come in handy) then the final for master is somewhere far right. And this system has never failed me and I’ve never once in my 15+ years of gaming ever had issues with it since. Every other game copies that same preset. With this or with oblivions lockpicking. Like how elder scrolls online attempted to do. I hope I could help, alas even this sounds complicated as heck. But the just is it’s been the same the last four generations of games and I don’t see it changing anytime soon especially with starfield and 76.

this wasnt even close to a tutorial. you might as well have said guess and check, wheres the tips? wheres the help? what happens if i find a spot where the lock turns majority of the way then the pic snaps? what should i do? this was so not helpful at all!

There is a Skyrim lock picking tutorial - find it ;)
it's the same in Fallout 3 and NV and even Skyrim ... you can hear the clicking of the tumblers, but in FO4 you can hear the tumblers better (well I can hear it better)

The lockpicking in fallout 4 is actually the same as the lockpicking in fallout 3\New Vegas and Skyrim. This was confirmed from the leaked gameplay footage from a while back.

If these locks were used in real life, even master locks would be better.

Or they would just be master locks, not meaning they're master difficulty, master lock is a company, which makes substandard locks.
