I always boil my water in the winter during backpacking trips, warm water is sooo good on a very cold night, and to cool it down faster from boiling put the pot in a stream for 5 or so minutes, or pack snow around it, always works good. -Jake

A lot of things changes when it comes to water when the temperature drops below freezing. Thanks for the tip :)

If you only intend to stay at camp one night and head back the next morning; I suppose you could still bring a filter and leave it fully submerged in the stream/river. So long as it's relatively fast moving so it won't freeze. Just a thought? Anyway, great video as always! Greetings from Squamish, B.C, Canada! If you're ever in the west coast area of British Columbia, Canada; best come explore the glaciers here. They're spectacular!

Luke, thanks for addressing this. I have personally have delt with this in the past and ruining two filters, an original First Need and a Pur Katadyn. I think the "Need" was partly was of age too!! However, both cracked over time, thus rendering themselves inoperable. And living in Indiana you just never know what the weather is going to be like and if your going to have a water source near by too, pending on your camp!?! I've actually cached water before on the Adventure Trail and smartly so.. But agzin, thanks for this tip. Mark...

Good Tip. I have used my katadyne in the winter, but made sure to empty/clean after use.

Oh thanks man you saved my filter. I was going to use him this week.
But now I'm going to leave it at home.

Great piece of advice. I really enjoy your videos. Boiling water does always work very well. I really don't like the tablets and they are probably not all like this but my steripen is very heavy. I always prefer a water filter. I use a Sawyer. it's small enough that with a clove hitch and a bit of paracord it can be worn around your neck like a necklace and inside of your jacket. That's just my opinion. Like your videos man. Keep them coming.

At or below freezing, the tablets require hours to be effective. Boiling is pretty much the only option.

I sometimes use my sawyer mini in the winter. I always keep it in my pocket close to my body and when camping close to the fire. When I am sleeping I have it in my sleeping bag. The reason is that if I only boil the water it can taste really bad. The filter makes it taste much better.

Okay, so you boil the snow, and now you have 'filtered' water, but the snow usually still needs to be filtered from the particles. So, how do i do that?

I have used chemical treatment UV treatment boiling and filters I normally use filters year round in the winter I bring a zip lock bag and place the filter it's self in the bag and keep it in one of my pockets and inside my sleeping bag (still in the zip lock bag) when time for bed.

I saw somewhere that if your filter is small enough (i.e. mini sawyer) that it would be OK to put the filter in an inside pocket? But like fire methods, one is none, two is one.

Hey, do tablets work as filters? I know that they are used as a method to purify water after you filter the water from the stuff in it. I had this issue last time I went camping in the cold. I got water from the frozen lake but didn't know how to remove the stuff in it, no matter how you try to not get anything in it while collecting it, youll still get something, and it is yellow. So I boiled the water and then used coffee filter to remove anything from it as dirt, small chunks of leaves or anything. But it is still not as effective as a filter. I was also going to use the tablets but boiling it purify the water so no need to use the tablet as it takes long time to do so in cold water. I think my question would be how do you actually filter the water before the purification step? Whether that was boiling it, tablets, or the UV light.

Thanks!
