GRIP in Germany conducted a comparative test of pedestrian emergency braking systems for Mercedes, Tesla, and BYD vehicles. Here's a summary of the results in English:

1. Test Scenarios:
- Static pedestrian on the road
- Pedestrian crossing suddenly from behind an obstacle
- Rainy conditions with reduced visibility

2. Results:
- Tesla Model 3 (USA): 7.5 out of 9 points
- BYD Seal (China): 5.5 out of 9 points
- Mercedes EQB (Germany): 3.5 out of 9 points

3. Performance breakdown:
- Static pedestrian test: All three vehicles performed well, scoring full points.
- Crossing pedestrian test:
* Tesla performed best, with consistent braking
* BYD had mixed results, sometimes braking effectively
* Mercedes struggled, often failing to brake in time
- Rainy conditions test:
* Tesla performed surprisingly well, even with camera-only system
* BYD failed to detect the pedestrian in all attempts
* Mercedes also failed to detect or brake for the pedestrian

4. Key takeaways:
- Tesla's camera-based system outperformed the competition, even in challenging conditions.
- BYD showed promise but struggled in adverse weather.
- Mercedes unexpectedly performed poorly, especially in the more challenging scenarios.

The test highlighted the importance of these systems in potentially saving lives, as approximately one pedestrian dies daily in traffic accidents in Germany. However, it also emphasized that drivers should remain vigilant, as these systems are not always reliable.

Only time it will truly be unsupervised is when Tesla, not us, will be liable for any accidents caused by FSD.

FSD is great. And then sometimes it just farts out. 4-way stops, merge road cones, police officer directing traffic for school zones - it just can’t handle it. How people think they can sleep while this thing drives seems silly at the moment.

I think we need a new column for errors because I wouldn't call that disengagement....

I am on HW3 with v12.5.4.1 (model S Plaid) and, in the LA area, I never get any critical disengagement. The only disengagements I get come from planning mistakes which, after rerouting, would still allow the car to get to its destination if I did not disengage. I think, in my area, that it’s pretty much solved. With the addition of reverse and park, it will pretty much be robotaxi ready around here. V13 might be it.
By the way, Waymo is operating here and they are not perfect. They just count disengagements (which are hidden by the absence of a driver) much more leniently.

I agree with you. The system is VERY impressive. I used it today to drive me an hour and 45 minutes home from Philadelphia to Reading, PA. No needs to take over, it changed lanes at all the right times, if someone was approaching from behind it moved out of the way to allow people to pass. In the city of Philadelphia it navigated the roads flawlessly. But as great as the system is, I also believe that we are a long way from Robotaxi and unsupervised driving. Especially when the car can’t see the roads due to weather or sun glare. What I do want to know, how do you get the car to drive without having to keep your hand on the steering wheel? I am always getting the blue flashing warning even when I am holding the wheel.

As for NHSD doing an investigation on Tesla FSD, I think there is more to the story that isn’t being told. Even in your video, it handles things well that a “Human” driver would have missed due to blind spots and things of that nature. I have a hard time believing that the car hit someone in FSD. And if the car was in FSD, Tesla should be able to confirm that. I believe people are using FSD for their own failures to be responsible drivers. Videos like this, prove that. Nice job on your video. Thank you!

I agree FSD is way far off from sleeping in the back seat. My experience is based on the last 30 days free we all got. I just received another 30 day free email from Tesla today!!! I'm hopeful there are some good improvements.

In terms of unsupervised next year I don’t see it happening either. Just today mine almost ran a stop sign. Did not slow at all prior to my disengaging

I think it failed to recognize the stop sign bc the city put two red flags on top construction-style. So I guess to FSD that’s different enough to not qualify as a stop sign. It seems FSD cannot generalize. I’m pessimistic about what that implies for the long tail of weird road stuff

The "Expanded Visualization" is when you activate FSD and it fullscreens it for you without dragging it over manually. See 3:36 for example.

And I'm realizing you mentioned that right after 😂 typed my comment before watching the rest. I still love the video! 😅

FSD V13 may be so much better that you will begin to see Autonomy at the end of the tunnel. Another Great video! Thank you!

I'm loving the Summon feature used it twice and everyone is looking at the car confused.

I agree that we probably won't have complete autonomous unsupervised FSD next year but even if it alerts us to take over when it needs help, it would still be another step forward, so that when I drive home at night from the airport after vacation if I doze off for a second or two, it will keep me and my family and other cars on the road safe and I also don't get a strike out

11:20 Don’t worry! I’m here for your rambling 😊

Thanks. I'm looking forward to extreme winter weather drives and more emergency vehicle interactions!

Do you remember when we had to nagg the wheel every 30 seconds? I was on a random errant ride earlier this week and this thought occured to me... hehe fun times.

Thanks Chris. I agree that when you look back at how far we have progressed, it seems like unsupervised should be just around the corner but when you look ahead, the gap between where we are and perfection still feels pretty far. The only thing I can think is if V13 is truly a clear step change from V12, maybe we are closer than we think.

Chris: “we’re just so far away from me being able to not pay attention”

Also Chris: “I didn’t even have to pay attention this entire drive”

*Running 12.5.4.1 in a 2024 MYP* I'm super impressed with FSD in general. This is my first Tesla, coming from Honda/Acura products and having worked in car rental early in my professional career, I'll say it's not the most luxurious driving experience, but my main gripe with most vehicles I've driven is that the technology lacks hard. Tesla is killing it in the technology space, and I love the fact that over the course of ownership I'll get OTA updates that help keep the car 'fresh and fun'. I do miss ventilated seats and think the build quality has a lot of room for improvement, but I'm loving the car so far!

Gee, I have large speed bumps as you have in your vid, but there is a stop sign before it can go over-it. It's like the stop makes FSD totally forget the bump and it crushes the accelerating pedal and the car just rips into those 2 bumps at high speed. I hope this can get fixed!

The expanded visualization shows what car sees at an intersection at least that’s the difference I noticed and also more lanes of the highway instead of the standard 3
